[edit] Biography

Dick, who began his coaching career in the Cubs' organization, returned to the club in 2003 as bench coach...as a player, he pitched for Boston in the 1975 World Series. As a coach, he has been in the postseason with the Cubs in both 1989 and 2003, with San Francisco in 1997, with Boston in 1998 and with Cleveland in 2001...this will be his 18th season as a major league coach. Attended Northern Michigan University. His nephew, Hank Pole, was a pitcher in Montreal's farm system in 2002.

Coaching Career: Dick began his coaching career in the Cubs' organization in 1983. Spent five years in the minor league system, making stops at Quad City (A), Pittsfield (AA) and Iowa (AAA). Joined the major league club in 1988 as pitching coach under Don Zimmer a position he held until 1991. The 1989 Cubs won the National League East Division title. After serving as pitching coach at Pawtucket (AAA) in 1992, he returned to the majors the following year as San Francisco's pitching coach and was a member of Dusty Baker's coaching staff from 1993-1997. Was Boston's bullpen coach in 1998, Anaheim's pitching coach in 1999, Cleveland's pitching coach in 2000-2001 and Montreal's pitching coach in 2002.

Playing Career: Dick, a former right-handed pitcher, played professionally from 1969-1981...saw big league action with Boston (1973-1976) and Seattle (1977-1978), going 25-37 with a 5.05 ERA in 122 games (77 starts). Made his major league debut in 1973 after going 12-9 with an International League-best 2.03 ERA at Pawtucket (AAA). Also led league pitchers in strikeouts (158), as he completed 16 of his 23 starts...threw a no-hitter that season June 23 against Peninsula...pitched for the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series. Was a member of Boston's starting rotation that season until June 30, when he was struck in the right cheekbone by a Tony Muser line drive. Went to the Mariners in the November 1976 expansion draft. Went 7-12 with a 5.15 ERA in 25 games in Seattle's first campaign in 1977. Ended his playing career with stints in the Pittsburgh and Detroit organizations.
