Dick Padden (Richard Joseph Padden) was born on September 17, 1870 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He made his Major League debut on July 15, 1896 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1896, his rookie year, he hit .242 with 2 home runs and 24 RBI. Padden played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Senators, St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Browns over the course of his 9 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Dick Padden's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1897, when he hit for a .282 average and knocked in 58 runs. However, others believe that it was 1899, when he stole 27 bases, hit for a .277 average and knocked in 61 runs.
