Devin Hester: One Touch is One Too Many

11

by user Clayton St. John Smythe Esq.

As the Cubs and White Sox seasons grind to a halt, locals are looking for that pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow (and I’m not talking PRIDE Parade here, Mr. Stiles) Look no further than the ’07 Chicago Bears, who in the off season have added remarkable speed to their offense in 1st rounder TE Greg Olsen, 3rd round RB Garrett Wolfe and moving sensational special teams TD return artist Devin Hester to the scoring side of Da ball.

After a RIDICULOUS record breaking rookie season, in which the “Windy City Flyer” returned 5 kicks for touchdowns, longest return (108 yds), Most TD returns in one game (2), and Most TD returns as a rookie (6 – including the Super Bowl’s opening kickoff), Devin Hester had changed the face of special teams play in the NFL. But alas, it was inevitable that Hester’s playmaking havoc in ’06 would have to be hindered in his sophomore season.

No one wants to kick to “Anytime” Devin Hester anymore.

While Hester was adamant about sticking to his Hurricane roots and developing at corner, after a little encouragement from Bears OC Ron Turner and Coach Lovie Smith, Devin embraced the team’s efforts to see him on offense.

Hester’s impact on the overall game of professional football has been made abundantly clear, and the kid has quickly become somewhat of a superstar to boot. But the plays made are still a day’s wage for the young buck, which is almost as refreshing as his gameplay, in an era of sensational celebrity, excessive endorsements, and outrageous off-field antics. With Linebacker Lance Briggs holding out for big money and Alex Brown seeking a contract-breaking trade, Hester’s sentiments coupled with his amazing athleticism are just what this Bears team needs. “We had several meetings until I just really said that there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’ and however I can help the team I’m willing to do it,” Hester said.

Offense it is, and it should prove to be great news for a team which rarely gets props for any weapon besides Da D. So instead of watching the Cubs’ dugout disasters and the White Sox sucking like the suckiest sucks that ever sucked, here are some greatest Hester hits as a Hurricane for summer soothing (‘cause I know everyone has seen the 06 Bears season highlights over and over and over….)

For all the skeptics, Hester has shown he has hands for the pass in training camp. If he can just digest the playbook lining up at RB and wideout, he’s bound to find end zone pay dirt at will, and any given Sunday will be “Anytime” for the Chicago Bears offense. If not, he’ll be making NFL history as the greatest decoy threat ever known, because just one touch will be one too many.

The "Chair appreciates the homer articles in that it gives us a closer look at things we don't neccessarily see. Now, if you were aYankke fan, that's different... Didn't they try this with Hester at the U to little avail? That was then, but...

Yeah, but they had him playing like 4 different positions at the same time. That and college coursework might have been a little bit too much for a football brain to take in...

Kickoff team mostly has defensive players and a kicker. Punt team is also filled with defensive players and a punter and long snapper. The Punt return team is also filled with mostly defensive guys, although it's a more even mix. The kick return team is almost exclusively offensive guys and then a return guy. The field goal team is all offensive guys as well. Different special teams situations require different emphasis on blocking vs. tackling. And in general, defensive players are better athletes lending themselves to more special teams.

You'll find speedy secondary/DBs in all those situations (except FG), some TEs, LBs and a few WRs... Field Goal Units (save the kicker) include TEs and O-line but d-lineman have been known to step in...

Technically isn't the return specialist part of the offense? See this is one of the reasons why no longer like American football as of yesterday.

Special teams are the ridge on the coin, offense and defense are the head and tail of the coin. But it ain't a coin without all three. Most Offensive football players will not allow kickers and punters to be considered one of them. And Defensive players hate punters and kickers. So that's why God made Special Teams

Mmm makes sense. There's no doubt that Devin Hester is exciting to watch. Being a foreigner you'll have to forgive my ignorance but during Super Bowl XLI at the opening kickoff I was screaming and jumping up in the air, thinking wow, this will be some game. Nothing much happened for the rest of the game.

The again you can't judge a sport merely on it's championship game but unfortunately it's the game that most people are exposed to.

If I can recall the only close Super Bowl in modern times was Super Bowl XXXLII when Tom Brady kicked a game winning field goal in the final seconds against the Rams. Hope I'm right on this one?

Davis, I think Super Bowl XXXLII would be Super bowl 22. X before a bigger number means you have to subtract it. Hence super bowl XL being 40 and not 60. Nice try, come back again.

Championship games often seem to be blowouts. It's the same in Australian football. But to be fair the last 2 AFL Grand Finals were decided by 4 points and 1 point respectively, which is an extremely close game in Australian football terms. I think it has a lot to do with one team simply wanting it more on the day.

It's kind of sad really. I wish every game of football could end in walkoff field goal or go to OT.

I saw that video of Devin Hester go for the TD return against Duke. MAYBE Duke could have and should have stopped him but regardless he's a great talent and if people disregard his skill on special team, then they don't really care for excitement.

I kinda stopped watching and started drinking after that. I was emotionally exhausted and Rex started driving nails into my whiskey filled coffin. However, Sexy Rexy has a new QB coach that actually yells at him, works on fundamentals, and word has it that Rex is feeling comfortable in the shotgun (which has been a foreign language to the Bears O for far too long)

It was nice of Grossman to hang around Chicago during this offseason to keep Tank Johnson company while in jail. Or was that the safest place for Rex to be?

Pretty sure the "suckiest sucks that ever sucked" remark paraphrased the wise Homer Simpson, who once said something was "the suckiest suck that ever sucked a suck."
