I'm back from another week off, here to bring you another edition of the Detroit Sports Review. This week, the Pistons are looking good, the Wings are looking great, the Tigers are looking better than ever, and the Lions are looking stupid. Lets start off with news from the Tigers...
Detroit Tigers- Many Tigers fans have been anticipating for the 2008 MLB season to get underway. This will be the longest four months ever. The new addition of Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera is getting everyone pumped. But with this new addition at third base, everyone is wondering where Brandon Inge will end up. Optimistic Inge fans are hoping that Cabrera will move to left field in order for Inge to remain at third. That's not gonna happen, because in that case, they would've never picked up Jacque Jones.
I'm sorry to all you Brandon Inge fans, but Inge will be in a different uniform by the time the off season ends. The Tigers now have a lineup filled with the best hitters in the league. Inge isn't one of them. Last year, he hit for a .239 average with 12 home runs, and led the league with 150 strikeouts. That isn't somebody you need to help your lineup. Many people feel that he is the best defensive third baseman in the league. Well, there is no problem thinking that. I've seen Inge make great plays at third, but I've also seen him commit 25 errors this past season. A lot of people say that he has 25 errors because he gets to more balls than other third baseman. Look people, it doesn't matter what zone rating or range factor that he has. He just isn't the right third baseman for the Tigers anymore.
I've never seen so much hype over a career .241 hitter. I'm sorry to all you Inge fans, but he isn't going to be back in a Tigers uniform. He already stated that he would rather start on another team, rather than be a backup for another team. I understand that Inge is a fan favorite here in the city of Detroit. That's cool. He has been with the Tigers since 2001, which means he's been through the 100 loss years, and the World Series' years. He has played the catcher positions, than moved to third when Ivan Rodriguez came here. He is only one year removed from 27 home runs. But Detroit is going to have to get over the fact that he is gonna be gone. Sorry, I'd rather be truthful than hopeful.
Detroit Lions- Once again, I have to waste my thoughts on this Lions segment. A team who was once in the playoff picture, now a team that has fallen off the face of the earth. I aint trippin' about them. I never fell for that 6-2 crap. I was very happy for them, but these are the same ol' Lions that I've been watching since I was a little kid. Many say that the Lions have broken their heart this season.
Well, the Lions have broken my heart my whole life. There is never a reason for me to get optimistic about a 6-2 start. Once they lost that game to the Arizona Cardinals, it was all downhill from there. Jon Kitna was never my pick for quarterback. Even though Calvin Johnson has mad talent, he was never my pick for the 2007 draft (*cough* Adrian Peterson *cough*). And the Lions were never my pick for the '08 playoffs. Jon Kitna made one of the stupidest comments that I've ever heard in my lifetime, last week. After a blown game to the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago, he was asked about his 10 win season prediction. He answered by saying, "We're still gonna win 10 games this year. We still got the playoffs." After that dumb remark was made, I felt pretty embarrassed to be a Lions fan. Now I never expected the Lions to beat the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, but I didn't expect them to lose, 51-14.
What happened to the high powered offense that was ran by Mike Martz? I just disappeared, just like the Lions season. I do have sort of a love-hate relationship with the Lions. I'm sure many of you understand where the hate comes from. It comes from just about everything they do. It comes from Matt Millen’s sense of stupidity, Jon Kitna's 5 interception games, and Mike Martz's brilliant running scheme. But where does the love come from? Well, it comes with the territory. Detroit is still a sports town, despite the Lions ‘’suckiness’’. I'm still a fan, and I still go to the games. I love my hometown teams, and yes that means the Lions too. But season like this don't bother me, because I expect them to be horrible. Many Lions fans are scratching their head. I'm not. I'm only 16, but I do have enough knowledge and wisdom to realize that the Lions suck. Yeah, I said it. They suck. I would continue my rant on these bums, but I feel that I'd be wasting my words.
I am looking forward to two things for the Pistons, or should I say, two players. The Pistons acquired two players who aren’t so bad. All they had to do was trade Nazr Mohammed away to the Charlotte Bobcats. Not a bad move at all. Nazr definitely wasn’t needed on the Pistons. It seemed like every time he got on the court, it was 4 on 5 basketball. The Pistons get Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann. From what has been said and heard, these two are decent shooters. Brezec is a 7'2 C/F who can reach out to at least 20 feet and knock down the jumper. His best year came in the 04-05 season when he averaged 13 points and 7.4 RPG. He hasn't done much since then, especially since his back injury and his illness came last year. He has only started in 18 of 20 games this year and averaged 2 PPG and 2.2 RPG. He usually would start, but then he'd get benched quickly. He only averaged 13.4 minutes a game. The Pistons will get added depth to their frontcourt with a player who has the ability to shoot well from the outside. This is his seventh NBA season.
Walter Herrmann is 28, in his second NBA season. He has spent most of his career in the Spanish pro leagues. Herrman emerged in the last 17 games last season as he had 17.6 PPG. This season, not so much as he only has 4 PPG. He was able to get a lot of playing time last season but with the Bobcats new coach, Sam Vincent; he doesn’t allow Herrmann to play much for whatever reason. But Herrmann has potential. He can hit the three and he also knows how to take the ball to the paint. He isn’t scared to draw the foul and get his points from the free throw line, which is what the Pistons need. Pistons SF Jarvis Hayes may see his playing time cut short due to this transaction. This is sort of a win-win trade for both clubs. Both teams will get help in some way.
Detroit Red Wings- This is the best team in the NHL, point blank. A 24-6-3 record will prove it. They are getting the job done in so many ways. They get ahead early and hold the opposing team too few goals. When they are behind, they turn it up in crunch time and find ways to get back in it and win. They even get the job done when everybody isn't playing their best hockey.
They are 9-0-2 in their last 11 games. All of this, and they are without their stars Kris Draper, and Kirk Maltby. Draper said that he is making an attempt to return to the ice on Wednesday. Draper has been out with a sprained knee since November 27th. Maltby has been bothered by a sore lower back, and there's no timetable for his return. Tomas Holmstrom returned to last nights game against the Washington Capitals, and he jumped right in the action and scored 2 goals. He said that he was a little rusty, but he sure as hell didn't look like it. He's been out for two games with his sore knee, but it seems like that didn't bother him at all. Maltby has been out the same amount of time as Draper has, and the team has still managed to go 7-0-1 without them. If the Wings can be this dominant without their star players, imagine what would happen once they get back. Yeah, the Wings would probably be too dangerous. Fans are optimistic about Draper's return, but Maltby might not be back for a while. Overall, the Wings are looking better than ever. They've gotten off to a great start on the season, and they are gaining more and more momentum in each game. Expect this team to do big things down the line.
