The 2nd edition of the Detroit Sports Review is now here with more moves from the Tigers, more lose for the Lions, the Stones keep rolling and the Wings are...damn, what rhymes with rolling? Aw well, here is what's going on in Detroit for the week.
Detroit Tigers- Breaking news from today: It looks like Dave Dombrowski is pretty serious about his offseason moves. The Tigers traded their backup infielder, Omar Infante to the Chicago Cubs for their outfielder Jacque Jones. Jones, is a career .280 hitter with 164 home runs in nine seasons with Minnesota and the Cubs. The Tigers seem to like him because he can play all three positions in the outfield, and the Tigers are looking for an everyday left fielder. For now, he will possibly be platooned in left field along with Marcus Thames and Ryan Rayburn. He will also be a help in the lineup as the Tigers are scarce of left handed hitter.
This week belongs to the Detroit Tigers 2nd baseman,
Placido Polanco. Polanco proved himself to be on of the best 2nd baseman in the league by taking home, not only a Gold Glove, but also the Silver Slugger award. Both awards were his first.
Polanco didn't make an error all season at 2nd base, and surpassed a record for
consecutive errorless games, which was once held by Luis Castillo.
Another Tiger who brought home an award was outfielder, [[Magglio OrdoƱez]]. The rightfielder had outstanding numbers this year hitting .363 with 28 homers and 139 RBI's.
Note: The Tigers return their backup shortstop, Ramon Santiago. The Tigers resigned him to a 1 year, $575,000 deal.
Santiago is a key utility player, and he is, and has been a superb
infielder for the Tigers.
There has also been trade talk with the Pittsburgh Pirates this past week. Since the Joel Zumaya injury, and the question if Todd Jones will resign with the team, the Tigers are eying veteran arms such as, Matt Capps, Damaso Marte and Salomon Torres.
There have also been stupid forum writers saying that the Tigers would deal Placido Polanco or Carlos Guillen for the New York Mets, Carlos Delgado.
What the hell? The rumors probably came from a Mets fan WISHING that they could have Polanco or Guillen. http://gothambaseballmagazine.com/forums/index.php?topic=422.0
Detroit Pistons- The Chicago Bulls gave the Pistons their first loss of the year by beating them 97-93 but that didn't kill the Stones.
They blewout the Los Angeles Clippers a few days later, giving the Clips their first loss this season. Score, 103-79.
But last night was a game that they were lucky to get away with. After leading the Seattle Supersonics by 25 points going into the third quarter, the Sonics made a fight until the end. They managed to tie the game up in the 4th quarter but the Stones were able to hold them down and win the thriller, 107-103 giving the Sonics an 0-7 start to their season. Their next game is on the 13th against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Reports from a few days ago were saying that Pistons, Chris Webber may be considering going the the Cleveland Cavaliers, but it may require a trade, bringing in the ex-Spartan Shannon Brown.
Makes sense to me.
While Webber is at home sitting on his ass, he could be in Cleveland helping out. The Cavs are depleted in the frontcourt with Donyell Marshall out with an injury and Anderson Varejao holding out (for money that he isn't worth).
Other than that, there hasn't been much news concerning the Pistons this past week.
Detroit Lions- OK, raise your hand if you think that the Detroit
Lions are really serious about playing football. Really, none of you
guys? Wow, why is this not a surprise to me? Maybe because the Lions
tend to lose to teams like, uhhhh....hmmm, oh yeah. The Arizona Cardinals? Are you effin kidding me? I guess not. Not that I'm saying that the Cardinals are a bad team. I just think that the Lions, having the momentum from last weeks game, should have been able to beat a questionable Arizona team.
Turnovers, running game, defense, penalties, stupidity. All the things that made me sick about Sunday's game.
Especially the stupidity part...
Detroit sports idiot of the week- Offensive lineman, George Foster. Foster leads the league in false start penalties and he added to his total with 3 more idiotic penalties on Sunday. After Jon Kitna launched a touchdown pass to Roy Williams, it was called back on one of Fosters penalties. He was not lined up on the line of scrimmage and it was his 3rd penalty, which happenned to cost the Lions a score. He was benched, late in the 4th quarter, which proves nothing.
What a douche.
The schedule may have favored Detroit to get them to 6-3, but the road ahead gets tougher. Three of their next four games come against playoff bound teams, such as the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. The Lions trail the Packers by two games in the NFC North and should New York beat the Lions next Sunday, the Giants would gain a tiebreaker edge over them in the wild-card race.
The Lions remained well positioned for a serious playoff run at 6-3, but it will be interesting to see how easily they shake off the effects of Sunday's performance, considering this was a winnable game.
Detroit Red Wings- Waiting 7 days for the Wings to play again was a struggle for me. The long layoff didn't effect the team on Friday as
the Wings took care of business by beating the [[Colombus Blue
Jackets]], 4-1. That was their 9th straight win and it tied for a
But that was on Friday.
Sunday seemed to be a different story.
The Chicago Blackhawks is the only team that the Wings cannot figure out. This is the 3rd time that these teams have faced off and Chicago has won all three. Now the Wings sit on a 13-3-1 record after the 3-2 loss to Chicago. The Red Wings 9 game winning streak may have came to an end on Sunday, but Henrik Zetterberg's point streak didn't. After his 14th assist on the year, the NHL's leading scorer now has extended his streak of games with at least 1 point to seven games. He now has 26 points on the year. Also, goalie, Chris Osgood was handed his first loss of the year by giving up all 3 goals.
Detroit will have come back to their next game against the [[St. Louis
Blues]] on Tuesday, then after that is a four day wait until they play
Chicago again who they are 0-3 to this season. Anaheim is the only
other team in the league that has beaten Detroit.
