Being the cool person that I am, I decided to start sharing whats going on in the world of Detroit sports, with you fellow AGMers. This is the 1st edition of the Detroit Sports Review, so enjoy...
Detroit Lions- The Lions put a beating on the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Final score 44-7. The Lions are looking better and better every week, especially the defense. The Lions have only allowed 16 points or less in the last 3 games. VERY rare from the Lions, especially after letting the Washington Redskins score 34 in week 5.
The Lions lead the league in takeaways with 20 and are 1st in the league in yards allowed with 2873. Running back Kevin Jones is evening out the team by bringing the running game back (like it was ever there). Though he has only had one 100 yard rushing game since he has been back, he still brings balance to the offense and takes pressure off of the passing game.
The rejuvination of the Lions may be a great story, but they continue to be overshadowed by the play of Brett Farve and the Green Bay Packers, who sit atop the NFC North with a 7-1 record. Don't get to crazy Green Bay. Detroit is right behind you with a 6-2 record.
Can you say...Playoffs?
The first two games, the Pistons didn't have their shooting guard, Rip Hamilton due to the birth of his child, but they still managed to go 2-0 without him. Rookie, Aaron Afflalo took his spot and he didn't do too bad...well, at least not as bad as other rookies usually do.
But no Rip, no problem. The Pistons still got the job done. When Chauncey Billups was asked if he thought that Rip would get his job back, the point guard said that they're 2-0 without him. Of course Billups was joking around, but he wasn't lying.
Detroit started out the season in Miami against the aging Miami Heat. With the Heat Dwayne Wadeless, Detroit topped them 91-80. Then they went to Florida to play the Orlando Magic. Once again, no problemo. They beat the youngsters 116-92. In the home opener last night, they had a little trouble putting away the Hawks, but Chauncey managed to take it to the lane and sink the game winning free throw with 1.7 seconds left in the game. Their next game is on the November 8, where they play their rivals, the Chicago Bulls.
Detroit Tigers- The trade for Edgar Renteria is keeping Tigers fans
optimistic about their chances in the future. With the departure of P Jair Jurrjens and OF Gorkys Hernandez, Renteria seems to be the right
move for the Tigers infield.
Reportedly, Zumaya was helping retrieve things from his house in San Diego during the wildfires and a box landed on his shoulder. Its kind of suspect to me. How does a box land on your shoulder? There are rumors going around that Zumaya messed his shoulder up by falling off of his dirt bike. There were also reports that he got into a fight with a guy over a girl.
Remember, Zumaya has a history of injuring himself doing stupid stuff. The 2006 offseason, he injured himself playing Guitar Hero. I wouldn't be shocked if he injured himself doing something stupid. I'm not sure what's going on but it doesn't matter now. He is suppose to be out for half of the 2008 MLB season.
Detroit Red Wings- Along with the Ottawa Senators, the Wings continue to be the hottest team in the NHL. With an 11-2-1 record, the Wings are looking as sharp as they've ever been. LW Henrik Zetterberg, who has been the hottest of all is trying to revive Hockeytown and bring the Stanley Cup trophy back to the city.
Zetterberg came out of nowhere and he has 12 goals and at least a point in all 14 games this season. He leads the NHL in points with 24. Another Wing who is starting to get his swagger back is C Valtteri Filppula. He got off to a slow start in the beginning of the season but he's had 2 goals the last 3 games. It may not sound as good as it really is but the Wings need to get him going to keep pushing it to the playoffs.
And how about G Chris Osgood? He now is at a perfect 7-0. With G Dominik Hasek out with a hip injury, Osgood has taken over and has only allowed 1.43 a game. He also has a save percentage of .936. The only thing that looks to stop the Wings is the long layoff that they are on right now. Hopefully the 6 day layoff won't affect them on the ice.
