Detroit Sports Review: A Week of Losses

It's the 3rd edition of the Detroit Sports Review and this week in Detroit, losing seems to be a trend for Detroit teams this past week. Lets start off with the Tigers.
Detroit Tigers- This week in the Tigers clubhouse, P Kenny Rogers is still sending mixed signals to the front office. Or at
least he was. Earlier in the week, Rogers was shopping for other teams
to see if anybody would throw any offers with him. General Manager,
Dave Dombrowski said that he was interested in having Rogers come
back to the team.
The chances of Rogers coming back has now boosted since the left hander fired his agent, Scott Boras. Boras, who was also an agent for all star slugger, Alex Rodriguez, was dismissed from all of Rogers negotiations on Thursday. Rogers will now be representing himself as a free agent and the next move for the Dombrowski is to resign the left hander. Without Boras, there will be no need for Rogers to have to search for the highest bid from other MLB teams. That seems to be Boras' favorite thing to do, on a count of he did the same thing with A-Rod. Rogers also wrote an email to the Associated Press stating that he hoped to remain a Tiger in the 2008 season. Rogers is expected to ask for a one year deal worth $10 million. The Seattle Mariners also expressed interest in Rogers but not much, on a count of they don't want to bud that high on him. Other than all this hoobla, nothing else is going on in the Tigers clubhouse. Just a quiet week.
last night with a loss to the Sacramento Kings, 95-105. They went 2-3 and lost to teams that were pretty beatable, the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers and the Kings. The Stones are know at 6-4 and they need to get back on track as they'l go against the New York Knicks on the 21st.
Chauncey Billups was out for the game against the Lakers, giving
the starting position to Ronald Murray. Murray has traits that Billups
doesn't have, but Billups has traits that Murray doesn't possess.
Murrays ball handling skills pissed me off on Friday. He managed to
score 15 points that night, but he also had four turnovers. He's a
great asset coming off of the bench, but when the rookie, [[Rodney
Stuckey]] comes back, "Flip Saunders please don't start Murray."
The other rookie, Arron Afflalo is starting to get more and more
comfortable on the floor. He's now averaging 11 minutes a game and he
is getting near about 5 points a game.
In other news, Jason Maxiell fouled out of last nights game, despite playing only 15 minutes. What a jerk.
While I did get the chance to see the Pistons play sorry this past
weekend, I also got to see a player who has great potential. His name
is Cheik Samb. A 23 year old, 7'1 C/PF. He came in during the Los
Angeles game on Friday and showed me something that we really needed.
DEFENSE! He only played a few minutes, but when he came in, he
immediatly had 3 blocks and a field goal. You don't think that is much,
but I see it as more minutes from him. With Antonio McDyess out
with an injury and Jason Maxiell in foul trouble, Samb came in and
grabbed four rebounds along with the three blocks. A big physical guy
who is not afraid to make a play in the paint. He doesn't have much
size on him but he does have length. Possibly, another star in the making?
Detroit Lions- The team with the animal cracker logo lost another one to the New York Giants on Sunday. I look at it like this...at least we didn't rush for negative yardage. We managed to get 25 yards. MAJOR improvement, right? Sure, anything is better than -18.
The defense who leads the league in takeaways still didn't do a bad job. They only gave up 16 points, but the offense only scored 10. The defense managed a couple of turnovers. New York's defense managed 3. So I can't really blame the D for their play today. They came through at the right times, especially at the end of the game. Detroit scored with a Jon Kitna deep ball to WR Calvin Johnson in the late segments of the 4th quarter. Johnson leaped in the air and snagged the ball from double coverage in the end zone, showing his strength and jumping ability.
After scoring, the Detroit defense forced the Giants to give the ball back with about 3 minutes left on the clock. On 2nd down in Giants territory, Kitna must have had the thought that WR Shaun McDonald had the same ability as Calvin Johnson. So Kitna launches a bomb to the end zone to McDonald, only to have it picked off. Just for the record, McDonald is about my height at 5'10 and Johnson is 6'5. So Kitna's thought process must have been screwed up to think that the midget in McDonald would make an effort to take the ball away from double coverage.
Didn't happen.
Next thing you know, the Lions defense comes up big again and forces a three and out from the Giants with about a minute in a half left in the game. Detroit gets the ball back and they manage to get back in Giants territory. Then Kitna throws a bullet to McDonald, which goes right through his hands and into the hands of a Giants defender.
Kitna did the thing he was best at doing though. He loves playing hot potato with the football. As soon as the defense gets the ball for him, he likes to give it back on a count of his 3 interceptions.
Now I'm looking forward to this game against the Green Bay Packers coming up on Thanksgiving. I will be with my family, and we will be in front of the TV. We could be looking forward to another loss, but with the inconsistency of the Lions, you could possibly expect a win against their division rivals, who by the way are 9-1.
Detroit Red Wings- This past week for the Wings was a week to
forget. The Red Birds ended up stuck in St. Louis the other night.
The plane was stuck in the mud and they weren't able to get out of St.
Louis, even with a win.
The game went to a shootout and the Wings ended up with the win with a Johan Franzen goal in the fifth round. Now the Wings are looking past the three game skid and now looking ahead.
Their next few games come against the St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and Colombus Blue Jackets. Henrik Zetterberg's point streak also came to an end on Tuesday. It was haulted at 17 games, but he still had the franchise record. He now has 30 points on the year. Chris Osgood now has a 9-1 record while the other goalie, Dominik Hasek is struggling at 5-4. Many people are wondering about what is going to happen with Hasek, but it really isn't a big deal. Hasek is still a little rusty, coming back from his hip injury and you can expect him to return to regular form later on down the line.
