Derby County Football Club were formed as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1884. This was in the time prior to the formation of the Football League so the club played mainly friendlies and FA Cup competitions.

In 1888 the Football league was founded and Derby County was admitted as an original member of the fledgling league. Their opening League match was against Bolton Wanderers which the Rams won 6-3. The club finished 10th in that first season.
