Denis is the first goaltender in National Hockey League history to be drafted and then start the following season in the National Hockey League, making the Pittsburgh Penguins' roster the fall after his 1972 draft year. Herron started the Penguins' third game of the season, a 5-2 win over the California Golden Seals. During that first season Denis won his first two road starts with shutouts of the New York Islanders and Vancouver Canucks.
