Defending the World Champ title

15
Vote

by user Sasha

Many people have come out against the title of world title but now I will defend it. With the new world series champion Cardinals how many of the Cardinals are from St. Louis? None. So they don't represent St. Louis no they play for St. Louis they represent Japan the Dominican Republic Puerto Rico various small town USAs including my home town Tucson Arizona.

So I will proudly call the Cards the World Champs because they beat teams with the best players from through out the world. Oh and for Pnatt who is one of the strong world champ haters there is even a player from Australia in the MLB his name is Peter Moylan he plays for the Atlanta Braves.

So what am I saying well those Olympic like tournaments where the US always loses are world champion stuff to but so is the World Series because the same people who play in the Olympic type stuff play in the World Series.

I don't give a shit if there's an Aussie player in MLB. The fact of the matter is that the term is arrogant.

Ok I'm just saying that the term is not completely untrue it is the best players in the world playing and they prove that they are the best team in the world.

Pnatt is a closed-minded, ignorant, arrogant, self-important, contradictary, clueless, bitter, disingenuous, annoying ass! The things he preaches against are actually the sum of who he seems to be.

Yeah but most of the players are American and you just can't call a local franchise team a World Champion. It's unique to American sports and arrogant in the extreme. I'd like to see some of the so-called North American "World Champion" teams comptete against the rest of the world!!!

I don't even know why im bothering to argue over such a stupid term. Why doesn't the CFL call the winner of the Grey Cup the "World Champion"? They have players outside of Canada playing in the league.

Tartan, less than half of the players in the CFL are from the US. Each team is allowed 17 import players.

I'm probably mistaken, but I was under the impression that the Olympic baseball team includes college players and somewhat second-tier professional baseball players (at least the USA one). I was also under the impression that baseball had been eliminated from the Olympics (will not be a part of the 2012 Olympics, still in 2008 Olympics, and can apparently return if it receives enough votes by 2016). The sport of baseball has been an "official" sport in just 4 Olympics. Cuba won the Gold medal in 1992, 1996, and 2004 (and Silver in 2000). USA won the Gold for baseball in 2000 in Sydney (and won Bronze in 1996; and apparently didn't field a team in 2004).

Japan: 1992: Bronze; 1996: Silver; 2004: Bronze. Taiwan: 1992: Silver Korea: 2000: Bronze Australia: 2004: Silver

Of the many nations in the world, only 16 have ever fielded a baseball team for the Olympics (and not for every year).

Medal results (hopefully that link will work).

Oh, and that long comment was in response to the last section of the opinion:

"So what am I saying well those Olympic like tournaments where the US always loses are world champion stuff to but so is the World Series because the same people who play in the Olympic type stuff play in the World Series."

Cuba has won the Gold every year except 2000, and I was under the impression that Cuban players in the MLB do not compete on the Cuban national team in the Olympics after floating over on a raft to the Dominican Republic (or elsewhere), becoming free agents, and joining in on the MLB fun.

All of this is true but I'm saying that because the players in the MLB represent many countries the world champ title has some credibility.

No it doesn't. They should be called the "World Series Champions". MLB does not represent the entire world and most the world don't even have access to watching any MLB games. And you even have to pay just to watch the bloody highlights!

Mike I understand the Cuban thing but as you said it is mainly lower tier players that play in the Olympics because they don't get paid where as the Cuban players are forced to play. And Pnatt THEY ARE THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD WHY SHOULD THEY NOT BE WORLD CHAMPIONS?

Because they're the only one league in the world. Of course they're the best team in the world, just like they're the worst champion in the world!

"because the players in the MLB represent many countries the world champ title has some credibility." I agree that it should have some credibility, I just wish that there was an added layer installed. World Series champ would play Korean professional league champ, Cuban National team (they showed in the Olympics that they are a good team, maybe the lose and are out early, maybe they win it all), Japanese professional league champ, etc. Why not just use World Series as the end-all be all? Not all of the best teams in the world play in the MLB, not all of the best players play in the MLB. Recall, some overall professional baseball records still held by Japanese players that never played in the MLB (Hank Aaron's overall 755 home-runs is hailed, but there is a Japanese fellow, Sadaharu Oh, with 868 home-runs).

I agree Sasha, the term does have credibility. The MLB is the top professional baseball league in the world. Players from all over the world make playing ing the MLB their goal. I think it is fitting that they call them World Champions. And I am not seeing a difference between "World Champion" and 'Wolrd Series Champion." On a side note, wasn't Damien Moss Austrailian? Does he still pitch in the majors?

The teams could be in Antarctica as long as the players are the best in the world then they deserve to be called World Champs.

Actually, he's right X-bot. The league would never have survived in the 1920's without the Yankees. Throughout the history of baseball, the Yankees are the ones that sold out visitor's ballparks. Don't you know anything about baseball? You say he is ill-informed, but it is you who is ignorant and moronic.
