Okay…I’m going to go out on a limb here and say few of us could probably toss out $800,000 at auction for Barry Bonds’ (*)756. And even if we did have that kind of money, why would we shell it out on a ball laced with The Cream & The Clear? Well turns out new owner, Marc Ecko (yes, the designer of the Ecko clothing line you can lesuirely peruse at any local T.J. Maxx…Love the gear Marc), forked over that amount. Now this should come with no surprise some Mr. Big Shot bought the ball…Why these guys are amazing! Too good to go and attend sporting events, they’d rather hold a private party for 500 of their closest friends, (which half of them they found on Myspace)…And even if they travel out to view a sporting event it’s in one of the cush-cush luxury suites drinking bubbly instead of beer, hammering down the cocktail wieners, instead of the ¼ dogs and enjoying their own private bathroom where the wall paper contrasts with the toilet handle instead of going to the can with 60 of your closet friends…Spraying bodily fluids everywhere!
However, in fairness to Marc…True, he might be the exact person I just described, however he’s offering fans the chance to decide the ball's fate through our most egalitarian of processes: the vote. Gee, what a noble guy!
The vote offers three choices…A, B, & C! Man, how all of us still like our multiple choice questions…Next to a dog, they’re man’s best friend! As for the 33.33 percent chance of getting the question right…Well the good news for those bad test takers out there, (myself including) there’s no right or wrong answer. Now why couldn’t college be this easy? Instead of sitting in the LastRow holding my sack of nuts, why I might’ve been sipping Marc’s bubbly. Nevertheless, as to the three choices Ecko is offering up for the ball…
Donate it as is to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Brand it with an asterisk and donate it to the Hall of Fame
Put it on a rocket and blast it into space
"I wanted the ball to democratize the ball and to give the ball to the people, to give the ball to America," Ecko told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer during an exclusive interview Monday. And while I’m all for that, I just can’t help but wonder about that third choice, (or is it "C"). Put it on a rocket and blast it into space…Where did that come from? The Chicago Cubs organization…The whole notion behind blowing up the Steve Bartman baseball. What an awesome idea! Marc, did you get clearance from NASA in case that is the overwhelming winner? Or are you going to have that wack-ass astronaut take care of all the details? Really, who thought of that? The five-year old who is scared of the dark and sees monsters in his room at night? Although I must say, ever since I saw Poltergeist as a child no less, (I know, what the hell were my parents thinking letting me watch that as a kid) there’s just something about clowns that gets me! That’s why I always flip on the light switch in my room so quick! And I’m sure I’m not the only one who has this same repetitive flashback!
