Death of a Super-Agent

Today has really been a good day. Another story really got my attention and has had me giddy all day long. Kenny Rogers firing Scott Boras is both awesome from a Tigers fan standpoint and from a sports fan standpoint.

First when looked at through the Tigers fan lens: Boras sucks. He took a guy who said “if I pitch next year I want it to be in Detroit” and turned it into “Highest Bidder Time.” Boras apparently took the Tigers offer and tried shopping it. Tigers didn't like that and Rogers apparently wants to be a Tiger more than he wants to be associated with Boras.

When looked at as a sports fan: it means the day of the super agent is dead. By super agent I don’t just mean an agent with lots of big name clients. That will never die, Jerry Maguire was a movie people. But I mean the agent who becomes as much a story as the player. Think Boras, think Drew Rosenhaus. These asshats are a perfect example of a bad agent. They may make some money, make their clients a lot of money, but they just seem like bad people. Sleazy guys. I personally know a few agents, mostly NHL guys, and they are truly great guys. They care about their players and realize they are not the story.

Hopefully this will end agents opting out of a player’s deal during the World Series, and it might end seeing agents on talk shows. I was never a big Kenny Rogers fan before, but I certainly am now.

I'm a little confused how being sleazy makes you a bad agent...a bad person maybe...but a bad agent

Realistically, Boras was probably trying to get the most money out of the tigers as possible...

I think Rogers firing him was two fold: 1) What has Boras been doing for the gambler lately...last I saw Boras, his lips were firmly planted on a-rod's ass, and secondly was the Tigers confusion...clearly Kenny wants to stay...good for him...and that shit on his hand ; - )

Boras is an SOB, but if I was a ballplayer, I would want him as my agent.

i think Boras is almost a necessary evil...total douche and has negatively effected the game...but players do deserve a chunk of the money they bring in...and boras gives that to them...maybe not 30 million...but if its your talent making 100s of million for owners, than you deserve a piece of that...

If your only interest is money, then there's no doubt Boras is top of the line. However, I've always gotten the impression that he tries to control his clients so that they both can make the most money possible. For guys who care more about winning and being on a team they love, Boras is not the guy, because he's going to pressure you to risk burning bridges with the team for more money, like what happened to A-Rod before he went out on his own to talk to the Yanks.

I got your back, ONR! I'm a lot BIGger than Boras is and I hate angry, fighty drunks. Plus, I know Frank Robinson and he can kick Chuck Norris' ass!!! (just meeting my quota)

I'm glad to know you have my back Manny. I just wanted to see Boras get destroyed by some biker dudes though.

Makes me wonder if Kenny's publicist finally just said, "You want to make people forget about that cameraman incident a few years ago? Fire your asshole agent."

OK, some more (I'm topping myself now...)

"Larry Bird is not Falking through that door.", Kanye West's hit single Jesus Falks, Polio vaccine pioneer Jonas Falk, Falk Soup, "Rock, Falk, Jayhawk", (An obligatory Simpsons reference) "Me bones are so brittle! But I drink plenty of Falk - Now with Vitamin R", Falkland Islands, etc.

I know 20 more will hit me later today - yes, I loathe myself sometimes becuase of these things...

Who is the more sleezy? The guy who acts like a sleezeball or the man who hires him to act like a sleezeball?

Scott Boras has so much money he probably isn't going to miss being an agent for any one player too much. Would like to know his percentage...if he gets even 10 percent of A-Rod's $28 million or however much he makes next season he would make roughly $2.8 million.

Scott Boras is only interested in Scott Boras. And it appears that the Hank Steinbrenner may have set a precedent that perhaps other teams may follow suite. Time will tell.

If I owned a team would not let Boras in the management offices..and just deal with his players alone.
