I write to you today because you are the General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers. ESPN.com is reporting that Edmonton Oilers defenseman Chris Pronger wishes to be traded this off-season. Mr. Clarke, the Flyers must make a move to get Pronger.
Pronger is a top NHL defenseman. He is young, fast, and has agility - all characteristics that are needed for players to be successful in the new NHL. As you know, the Flyers did not have those characteristics this past season, and that lead to an early playoff exit.
The Oilers will respect Pronger's request to be traded. More than likely, he will be traded to an Eastern Conference team, since the Oilers play in the Western Conference. Pronger's contract has four years remaining, with an average salary of $6 million. The salary cap is going up to roughly $44 million this season. The Philadelphia Flyers have the financial means to do this trade.
As far as what to give up: goalie Robert Esche will be included in the package. He is a good goalie, but he is not the future (or present) goalie for the Flyers. He comes cheap as well. The Oilers do need a goalie who is under 30 on the squad. Beyond that, the Flyers may have to send a prospect or two to finish the deal.
Chris Pronger is going to be traded this offseason. He will likely be traded to an Eastern Conference team. This team should be the Philadelphia Flyers.
Mr. Clarke, make this happen.
Sincerely,
A Flyers Fan
