Deal Done: Rocket Back In Houston

18
Vote

Prepare to be disappointed (or, perhaps, breath a sigh of relief), Rangers, Red Sox, and Yankees fans - the Houston Astros and Roger Clemens have a deal, and it's for real this time. Promise.
The Astros held a press conference and announced officially that Clemens had been signed to a one-year, $22 million contract. He's begun the process with a $322,000 minor-league contract; apparently he'll have three minor-league rehab starts before he rejoins the big club.
At the time of the announcement, the Astros were 6.5 GB the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals.

The Astros have 109 games left. That's about 22 starts per starter. Roger loses 3 for his rehab assignment, so he'll get 19 starts, but let's call it 20. $1.1m/start. Not a bad day's work.

I guess the Astros were in a position where they really had to make the move....but that is a horrible deal. $22 million for a guy who won't even give them 20 starts? Even if we assume that he'll perform at the level he did last year, which he will not, that's quite a lot of money.

you have to be kidding me? That is preposterous. Why would they give him that much money? I don't care how good he is. Absolutely rediculous.

They'll make the money back on the additional tickets they sell. Clemens is a story, and moreover, a native son.

You really think they'll sell $22 million dollars worth of *more* tickets because Clemens is there? Give me a break. No way will they possibly make the money back on tickets, not even if they make the playoffs.

If Houston doesn't resign Clemens, considering what the rest of their starters are doing, they lose credibility as a serious team. They had to take the hit even if it means 1.1 mil per start. Besides he could just have an ERA around 1.1 again anyways, then would it be worth it?

The contract is prorated for what is left of the season. He will actually end up making about $13 million for his 19 starts. Hey, Houston was over 15 games back last year and ended up in the World Series.

I don't like this. This sets a precedent for other veterans in the future to just wait until midseason to join up, while still getting paid the going rate. He's putting himself ahead of the team, bottom line. Can you imagine Bonds sitting out spring training, the regular season until the break, and then getting picked up by the Yankees in June or July? People would cry murder!

Where in this article or any other does it say this contract is prorated?
