Davis21wylie's Week 9 NFL Player and Team Rankings

Okay, no pithy write-up this week either (sorry, guys!), but I did manage to find the time to do the player rankings (and you wouldn't believe what a pain in the ass it is to do these things -- seriously, if anybody knows of a site that provides each player's rushing, passing, and receiving stats together on the same page, please let me know!). Anyway, McNabb's still clinging to the lead that he had when we last looked at players two weeks ago, but it's getting closer every week.

Plays are the number of opportunities the player consumes. Rushes count as a full play, while passes and receptions are worth half a play each.

TAY stands for Total Adjusted Yards, an attempt to scale all players' yards equally.

Net Points is an estimate of the number of points the player produced through his passes, rushes, and receptions. It is equal to TAY / 12.

Pts/Play is the number of points the player produced per play consumed.

PAR means Points Above Replacement; it's a rough estimate of the number of extra points the player produced over what a random minimum-wage free agent would have if given the same opportunity.

PAR/G is the average number of points above replacement the player puts up per game.

WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, and is the theoretical number of wins the player has added to his team over that which a random waiver-wire player would produce.

Peyton Manning, and, surprisingly, Marc Bulger, have each closed the gap to just a handful of PAR points in their last two games; Manning was solid again in some dinky little game last Sunday against some guy named "Brady" (who?), while Bulger continues to just flat-out torch the league, tossing for 354 yards against KC (even though his team isn't faring quite as well).

Speaking of the Rams and guys torching the NFL, LaDainian Tomlinson followed up his crazy 240-total-yard games against St. Louis in Week 8 with a similarly impressive 192 total yards (172 on the ground) against Cleveland last week. Surprisingly, LT has only had one truly dominant season by my method (2003), but he's putting together maybe his best year yet so far in 2006. Other running backs at the top of the list include Larry Johnson (who hasn't even been the most productive player on his own team -- WTF is going on with Damon Huard this year? Damn!), Tiki Barber (who some silly people thought would suffer a Curtis Martin-style drop-off in performance because he turned 31 this year), and Brian Westbrook, one of this column's favorite players.

Javon Walker and Reggie Wayne top the receiving list, which comes as a shock to pretty much nobody. But Marques Colston third? A couple of seriously monstrous games against Baltimore (6 balls, 163 yards!) and Tampa (11 rec, 123 yds) have sent him skyrocketing up the standings since my last player rankings came out. Also of note have been Roy "I Don't Care About The Score" Williams, Andre Johnson (who has cooled after a hot start), and Marvin Harrison, my favorite receiver ever (even more than Jerry Rice).

Team-wise, Indy moved up, but they're still behind the Bears (yes, I know they lost, big deal), Chargers, and Ravens (who outlasted those stubborn-but-underachieving Bengals last week). Basically, my system will penalize teams for close wins (which are frequently more a function of luck than skill), and Indianapolis has a handful of those this year. If they keep rolling, though, I guarantee they'll be at No. 1 before the season is through.

Week 9's MVP: Marvin Harrison, Indy. Just for old times' sake -- oh, and because he had 8 catches for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Week 9's Least Valuable Player: Vince Young, Titans. 30.2 rating, 3 picks, 37-7 drubbing at the hands of the Jaguars. 'Nuff said.

For those who didn't catch it last week: while I'm still predicting net points with the formula PNP = (Net Yards / 12) + (4 * Net Turnovers), and net wins by pNW = (Games / 2) + (PNP / 40), this method will only comprise half of my rankings. Since net yards don't take into account punt/kickoff/return yardage, teams with good special teams were being undervalued, so I'm also using the good old pythagorean projection:

pW% = (PF^2.37)/((PF^2.37)+(PA^2.37))

Predicted net wins and % are denoted by pW1 and pW%1, and pythagorean wins and % are denoted by pW2 and pW%2. "Rating" is simply the average of the two expected winning percentages.
