Since I'm hard at work at school, etc. (and I'm also hammering out the lovely NBA Preview), I'll limit the Pulitzer-worthy material this week and simply focus on some of my random thoughts from the week that was... Week 7.

Sorry, this week I've got some sticky orange stuff on my fingers...

Was Pittsburgh-Atlanta the best game so far this year? You could certainly make a case: it featured the best career single-game passing performance by the NFL's most exciting player, versus a superstar QB in his own right on the other sideline -- the latter of which got injured and replaced by a journeyman, who proceeded to pick up exactly where the starter left off. And, oh yeah, you can't forget six lead changes, a game-winning Atlanta FG that was negated by a timeout, a missed opportunity for a similar game-winner by Pittsburgh because of a false start, and finally a true GW kick in overtime by a 46-year-old guy who was sitting at home a month ago. All in all, a fantastic game.

Plays are the number of opportunities the player consumes. Rushes count as a full play, while passes and receptions are worth half a play each.

TAY stands for Total Adjusted Yards, an attempt to scale all players' yards equally.

Net Points is an estimate of the number of points the player produced through his passes, rushes, and receptions. It is equal to TAY / 12.

Pts/Play is the number of points the player produced per play consumed.

PAR means Points Above Replacement; it's a rough estimate of the number of extra points the player produced over what a random minimum-wage free agent would have if given the same opportunity.

PAR/G is the average number of points above replacement the player puts up per game.

WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, and is the theoretical number of wins the player has added to his team over that which a random waiver-wire player would produce.

Houston beat Jacksonville, 27-7. They gained 349 yards against one of the NFL's top defenses. Their own defense, easily considered among the worst in the league, allowed only a single TD, and held the Jags to only 118 yards through the air (that's 4.1 ypa). This is one of the reasons I love the NFL -- the old "any given Sunday" quote is trite, but it's largely true. Now Houston is in a position to grab another win next week against Tennessee; meanwhile, has there been a less consistent team than Jacksonville this year? For that matter, has there ever been a less consistent team than the '06 Jags? That weekly DVOA variance of 44.8% is simply astonishing.

Peyton Manning is Week 6's MVP after tossing for 342 yards and 4 touchdowns in Indy's Sunday-afternoon win over Washington. Don't look now, but he's closing the gap on Donovan McNabb as the 2006 MVP, especially after that Ronde Barber love-fest against Tampa.

Speaking of which, that 62-yard FG by Tampa's Matt Bryant was the longest game-winning kick of all time. Also speaking of which, Bruce Gradkowski is not that bad of a starting QB. Take that, Chris Simms! (I just realized I was seriously lagging behind on my Simms-bashing in recent weeks. And, no, his being injured is not an excuse.)

Props to Chester Taylor for making the column, thanks to his downright unconscious 169-yard explosion against Seattle. Why did I want him to do something column-worthy? So I could say something like "Chester Taylor was dangerously cheesy on Sunday." What? He was.

As much as I love Tecmo, I just can't get excited about Knobbe's SNES Tecmo ROM competition. Because, to me, it's NES or nothing. Those ports to the SNES were just plain legacy-tarnishing, like Jordan's Wizards stint, or when Evander Holyfield kicked an insurance salesman's ass. That doesn't impress me, and neither do TSB ports.

Week 6's Least Valuable Player is Edgerrin James. How in the hell do you lose to Oakland? Oakland? Is there even a punch line here? Is that the punch line? I'm confused.
