Well, it's official: 2006 is the Year of the Quarterback. With no dominant running back in sight (apologies to Brian Westbrook, Clinton Portis, and Larry Johnson), the league's elite passers have taken over, posting some fairly hefty totals as the season's first quarter comes to a close. And no QB has been more special in 2006 than -- you guessed it -- Donovan McNabb, who seems to be this column's favorite player, having been number one in the rankings for three straight weeks. He's also on pace to demolish Steve Young's record for the greatest season by a quarterback since the AFL merger (125.84 PAR in 1992). Let that sink in for a second...

Also playing out of their minds are Peyton Manning (not news), Marc Bulger (maybe news), Michael Vick (at least when you factor in his rushing), Chad Pennington (I guess the arm's okay, huh?), and Rex Grossman (!), each of whom have been worth more than 20 points more than a replacement player so far this season. Oh, and veritable future Hall of Famers David Carr and Damon Huard are 1-2 in the league in passer rating, each putting up ratings of over 106.9! Why the golden-armed explosion? Well, in simplest terms, today's liberalized passing rules have dramatically opened up the air attack, making it easier than ever before to torch bewildered secondaries for big gains. Of course, not every QB is enjoying a terrific season: Matt Hasselbeck has been inconsistent thus far, and it didn't help to run into the buzz saw of a defense that is the Chicago Bears, either; hamstrung by awful O-Line play, Arizona QB's Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart sucked it up big time against Atlanta last week; and Oakland's situation at QB (also compounded by poor blocking) has been hellish on a scale that Dante probably couldn't envision (that's Alighieri, not Culpepper). In other words, in today's NFL, you had better be able to pass (and pass block) if you want to win.

Plays are the number of opportunities the player consumes. Rushes count as a full play, while passes and receptions are worth half a play each. TAY stands for Total Adjusted Yards, an attempt to scale all players' yards equally. Net Points is an estimate of the number of points the player produced through his passes, rushes, and receptions. It is equal to TAY / 12. Pts/Play is the number of points the player produced per play consumed. PAR means Points Above Replacement; it's a rough estimate of the number of extra points the player produced over what a random minimum-wage free agent would have if given the same opportunity. PAR/G is the average number of points above replacement the player puts up per game. WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, and is the theoretical number of wins the player has added to his team over that which a random waiver-wire player would produce. But enough fawning over the QB's; after all, Westbrook is having a great season, along with Portis and Johnson. Fumblitis aside, Frank Gore is enjoying a pretty good campaign as well -- it certainly wasn't his fault that the Niners had to take to the air so soon against KC (his first-quarter muff only cost the team a field goal). But aside from Johnson, what of the vaunted Big Three? We all know about Shaun Alexander and the Madden Curse, but aside from a monster game against an overmatched Raiders defense, LaDainian Tomlinson has been pedestrian in 2006 as well (3.9 ypc), often being upstaged by backfield-mate Michael Turner. Willis McGahee is currently the NFL's rushing leader; he's averaging 3.9 yards per carry. In fact, among the league's elite rushers, only Westbrook and Tatum Bell (who's only played 2 games) are even averaging 5 yards per carry. So while defenses have been burned through the air, they've done a pretty good job of bottling up runners so far in 2006.

Because of the wild passing, though, receivers have also done well thus far. A number of wideouts are on pace for 100+ catches and 1300+ yards, including Marvin Harrison and Andre Johnson. Two guys that were once traded for one another, Santana Moss and Laveranues Coles, have put their big-play skills to good use so far as well, each placing in the top three by my method. And while many criticized Detroit's Roy Williams for loving first downs too much, I applaud the fact that he understands how important it is to move the chains, and I declare him a worthy member of the Elite Receiver Club®. Congratulations, Roy!

Week 4's MVP: Bulger. Why? Well, I can't panegyrize McNabb every week, can I? Did I just use the word "panegyrize"? Yes, I did. Now go and Google it, kids.
