Silencing the doubters. That seems to have been the overarching theme of Week 3, as several much-maligned quarterbacks finally broke out with big games for their teams. The obvious headliner, of course, is Brett Favre, who channeled the Favre of old when he delivered 340 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-36 passing in the Packers' win over Detroit -- coming out to be worth a stellar 127.1 QB rating, and 10.5 Points Above Replacement under my method outlined below.

Reunited with not sucking, and it feels so good

Favre's opponent, Jon Kitna (who many questioned as a legitimate starting QB before the season), also threw down a good performance despite the loss. Meanwhile, Mark Brunell and Jake Plummer were busy making statements of their own; with various talking heads calling for each quarterback's benching over the last few weeks, Brunell simply set an NFL record with 22 straight completions en route to a Washington victory, and Plummer had a 101.5 rating while piloting his Broncos to a win over New England at Gilette Stadium. And Alex Smith, whom many had written off following a disastrous rookie season, continues to excel this season. All of which goes to show that you can never count an NFL quarterback out... unless that quarterback happens to be Kerry Collins, who was brutal again in another Tennessee loss. I guess he's the exception that proves the rule. Maybe.

Plays are the number of opportunities the player consumes. Rushes count as a full play, while passes and receptions are worth half a play each.

TAY stands for Total Adjusted Yards, an attempt to scale all players' yards equally.

Net Points is an estimate of the number of points the player produced through his passes, rushes, and receptions. It is equal to TAY / 12.

Pts/Play is the number of points the player produced per play consumed.

PAR means Points Above Replacement; it's a rough estimate of the number of extra points the player produced over what a random minimum-wage free agent would have if given the same opportunity.

PAR/G is the average number of points above replacement the player puts up per game.

WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, and is the theoretical number of wins the player has added to his team over that which a random waiver-wire player would produce.

As for the rankings... last week's numero uno, Donovan McNabb, is still entrenched in the top spot after leading Philly to a win over the Niners. McNabb's teammate Brian Westbrook was the most outstanding player of that game, though, racking up 164 total yards and 3 touchdowns, a performance that allowed him to move into the number one slot for running backs. On the wide receiver front, Laveranues Coles maintained his grip on the #1 ranking with a 10-catch game vs. the Bills. His lead is anything but safe, however, as close behind him are Marvin Harrison, Javon Walker, and Houston's Andre Johnson, who posted an excellent 11-catch, 152-yard game against Washington.

Week 3's MVP: I'll call it a tie between sentimental favorite Favre and all-purpose machine Brian Westbrook.

Week 3's Least Valuable Player: Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers. I've always been a fan of Big Ben, but two straight games with a QB rating in the thirties? He'll get better as the season wears on and his rust/freak injuries fade into the rearview mirror, but you can't help but think that Pittsburgh would be better off starting Charlie Batch right now.

(Initially I wanted to list Chris Simms as the LVP again, but I felt bad about the whole spleen thing, and Big Ben was worse anyway. So here's hoping you get better quickly, Chris, so I can place you on the "Least Valuable" list again, guilt-free!)
