David Wright v. Derek Jeter

16
Vote

by user Awrigh01

According to the New York Daily News: "Teenage girls screech when he comes to the plate. Gossip columnists notice where he eats. People in baseball, including his own teammates, say he is blossoming into the new face of the Mets, perhaps the way Tom Seaver once was."

Image:David Wright.jpg or Image: Derek Jeter.jpg

Will the new guy in town eclipse Jeter as the most recognizable sports figure in New York? When all is said and done, who will have a greater impact on New York sports and their respective teams: David Wright or Derek Jeter. Debate.

This is absurd. Win 4 championships then we'll talk. Instead of worrying about how teenage girls love him, I would worry about making 3 errors in one game

This is a poor comparison. Jeter has been in the league 12 years and is established as a media star, the face of the Yankees organization, and a great player. David Wright has a lot of potential, but is just beginning his career. This debate has been posted about a decade too soon.

Jeter only helped win 4 championships. He didn't do it by himself. If Jeter was on KC would we even talk about Derek Jeter?

Michale Jordan helped win 6 championships. Joe Montana helped win 4 championships. What if they were on other teams? You evaluate a player based on his accomplishments and Jeter deserves the recognition for the 4 titles he has.

I think there is a difference between Joe Montana who leads 1/2 of a football team, calls the plays, etc. and Michael Jordon in a sport that is highly individualistic. Baseball is more of a team sport than either football or basketball. Bad analogy.

Of course you need a good team to win. But it takes special players on those teams to make them great. Jordan is one, Montana is one, and so is Jeter.

Although impossible to prove and pure conjecture, if Jeter was on the Royals no one would ever know that he was a clutch player and he would be considered a solid, above average SS. Jeter exists because of the Yankees. The converse is not true. The Yankees would have won without Jeter. I think Mariano and Paul O'Neil had more an effect on the Yankee victories than Jeter.

To clarify what I meant by win 4 championships: The article text says "who will have a greater impact on New York sports and their respective teams"...The fact that Jeter is the most recognized figure on the Team that won 4 championships means David Wright is going to have to do an awful lot to catch up...yet your first comment makes a complete turnaround of the debate: "Jeter didnt win by himself". True, but it doesn't change the fact that he owns NYC and is recognized throughout the country.

True or false and individual can have a greater impact on football season than on a baseball season? True. The short season, and the command that a QB has over his team, makes football more individualistic than baseball.

i would agree if you said "Who will have a greater impact on Kansas City Sports"...why even bring this up? You are comparing someone who already accomplished something (Jeter) to someone who *might* accomplish something. You can't take away what Jeter has done (which you are unsuccessfuly trying to do)

If you 100,000 people (who are not Mets or Yankees fans) to "name a New York baseball player," Jeter will be the pluarity votegetter among active players. There's little doubt in that. That may change in a year or three, but today, it's Jeter.

Jeter has made some great plays and is unquestionably clutch. However, that does not mean an individual can have a great impact over the course of a baseball season. If clutch performance is your yardstick for great ballplayers, shouldn't you include Luis Sojo to the mix?

reason you are wrong #2: I know you try to block it out of your memory, but Jeter was WS MVP in 2000...this doesnt mean the Yanks couldnt have won without him (i mean it was the Mets they played), but to say they wouldnt miss him is ignorant

Of course Jeter has an impact on New York sports. Due to circumstances, he will be considered a legendary player. Barring injury, David Wright will have better offensive numbers.

I love this, that's the best argument I have ever heard, "no one would be talking about Jeter if he was on KC." You freakin moron. No one would be talking about Wright if he was on KC either. He would be Mike Sweeney prior to the injuries. When all is said and done, Jeter has 4 championships and a plethora of defensive highlights. I still remember the series against OAK when Jeter came out of nowhere to intercept an errant throw and flip it back to Posada to make the tag at home. And this coming from a guy who thinks Jeter is ugly.

David Wright will eclipse Jeter as the face of New York sports. He will be a better offensive ballplayer (and probably defensively too), win a couple championships (maybe more). I also think he has the look, interview skill, and demeanor to be a legendary New York athlete. Think Mickie Mantle.

David Wirght is a more talented player than Derek Jeter. What that will result in, I don't know. What I do know is that David Wright is already one of the top 3bman in the league and assuming Albert Pujols does not play 3B, David Wright may be the best 3bman in the league very soon and for a very long time. On the other hand, Derek Jeter has never been the best SS in the league. He has always been a solid player but the only reason he is considered a superstar is because he plays in NY. The same goes for Bernie Williams. While championships are all well and good, Jason Garret won 3 superbowls and played in a 4th. Dan Marino playes in 1 SB and lost. Thats why championships are a silly measure of anything beside playing for the best team.

You have a weird weird fascination with Derek Jeter. You want him to be considered a bad baseball player more than anything in your life. Im not a phycologist (even though i can't spell it, but I play one on the internet), but I think you are extremely jealous of him. As your friend, I hope David Wright fullfills this void in your baseball life so you can move on past Derek Jeter.

MJD, the question isn't who is the better player, it's who will have a greater impact. And as far as impacting a city, championships are a very good measure. Look at he White Sox, who have are continuing to build a bigger fanbase in a town often labeled, and rightfulyl so, a Cub town. In terms of individual players, Curt Schilling was an instant legend in Boston becuase of the way he helped the Red Sox win a championship.

I am a huge mets fan, but that's rediculous. He's a superstar because he's been the best clutch hitter in baseball for the past 10 years. Being in NYC has helped his cause in terms of fame, but he's through and through a superstar, and he's done more than enough to prove it.

ARod is the most talented player in NY. Assuming he finishes out his contract with the Yanks, he would have played 6 or 7 years. If the Yanks win the World Series, no one will consider him the face of the Yankees

I think you are wrong. If we were talking about Paul O'Neill I would agree with you. look, the Yankees have maintained the highest payroll in the league and have failed to win championships even with Jeter, even as they have added Giambi, Sheffield, Arod and others. the reason for that is because they lost Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez. Derek Jeter is a single, attractive player who played SS at a time when it was a weak hitting, defense first position. He, Arod, Nomar and Tejada all came up and reinvented the position. At the same time, the Yankees built a tremendous foundation around him, especially the pitching staff. While Jeter gets the credit, it simply isn't deserved.

wow finally some people get it about jeter actually if one looks up his stats for his career with runners in scoring position with the exception of last year... he is actually anti- clutch- isn't that ironic? if you look at his stats in the post season you would be amazed... yes is post season average is good but not with runners on base...pretty anemic actually...
