David Beckham Makes Debut: LA Beckhams STILL Suck

The long awaited debut arrival of a foreign player past his prime, finally came to an end tonight. In the 72nd minute, David Beckham made his debut in front of 47,000 fans (At least half of them probably to see Beckham) at RFK Stadium. That's the good news, the bad news is that the LA Beckhams lost 1-0 to DC United and are still the only team in the MLS not to win on the road.

He made a couple of good crosses, including a superb one to Landon Donovan, but the DC United keeper Troy Perkins saved the day by knocking it away. But you look at him, and even with the ankle injury, he's still past his prime. What people forget is that one player cannot change the shape of a league. They even overlooked attendance. For the games that don't involve the Beckhams, how many people would show up (besides Toronto FC)? What would be different is if they had 20 superstar players like Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, or Wayne Rooney. But the problem is, that those players would only come to America if they are 34 years old and past their peak. Seriously, do you think Rooney would just decide that at age 20, "Blimey, I think I'll go to the MLS for quality football."? When this 5 year contract expires, you will not see MLS popularity shoot up like that. Quality in their prime players would be good for the league, a player past his prime isn't good for the league.

beckham looked great out there, and lets remember he's still not 100%. the Galaxy as a whole looked infinitely better while Beckham was on the field, even down a man. If you want to bash something, bash the coverage which even I'll admit was awful during the first half. They showed more of Beckham warming up and mclaren in the stands then the game. Second half perhaps because Beckham was actually on the field, was much better.

calling him past a prime and then saying "a player past his prime isn't good for the league." sounds a little like bashing

That can't be bashing. Look what happened when Pele came. Soccer popularity shot up, then dropped back down. You can't tell me the MLS will be different.

I think that the MLS will be different. The difference between Pele's NASL and MLS is that there is a background for the sport. The league has been around for a decade and is financially viable. There are a ton of Americans good enough to play in Europe. The National Team has at least been competitive.

I agree that Beckham is past his prime, but he's still a very good player and theres no reason to assume that he won't be the top player in MLS. His game is about great crosses and free kicks, which do lend themselves well to Sportscenter highlights. He should be ok.

I think as far as star impact though he is way up there. People in the U.S. have actually heard of him. The only guys with enough cache to even register would probably be like Ronaldo or Ronaldinho. Beckham is a known commodity. Rooney, Gerrard, and JT could walk down the middle of Times Square in their kits and holding soccer balls and no one would know how they were. My mom has never watched a soccer match in her life and she knows who Beckham is.

The thing is, people will go to LA Galaxy games to see him, but they won't go to a Revolution-Dallas FC game because of him. And if he becomes the best player in the MLS, how sad would that be? He's 34!

Correction: That should read "A top player" not "the top player"

I was busy too. There was some grass growth I had to monitor, and some drying paint that needed my observation.
