Danny Ferry is Coming to a Milk Carton Near You

by user Ross K.

This is an address from the emergency broadcast system. Please take a few minutes to look around your home or office to see if you can locate a missing person. His name is Danny Ferry. He's very tall, very white and very bald.

Ferry has apparently been missing for a few weeks as the Cleveland Cavaliers have failed to do anything of consequence since July 13.

Here's a complete listing of everything the Cavs have done this summer:
June 3, 2006 Signed guard-forward Stephen Graham to a 10-day contract.
July 8, 2006 Signed guard Shannon Brown, their first-round draft pick, and guard Daniel Gibson.
July 13, 2006 Reached agreement with forward LeBron James on a three-year contract extension with a player option for the 2010-11 season.

Wow!

Despite getting their rookies onboard and re-signing the best young star in the NBA without a championship ring, the Cavs have done absolutely nothing. It's hard to build a championship team around James when there're no building going on. The construction team has apparently clocked out early to go for drinks and left the construction site looking as deserted as a strip club on Christmas Eve. (Sorry, that's really the only analogy I could think of at the moment.)

Talks with Restricted Free Agent Drew Gooden are at a standstill because Gooden thinks he deserves a max contract and the Cavs (rightfully) think he doesn't. There was a rumor that David Wesley was ready to sign a deal like three weeks ago and that hasn't happened. They're supposedly shopping Damon Jones on the trading block but no other news has come of that.

What's going in the offices at Quicken Loans Arena? (Still hate that name by the way.)

I realize the NBA season is still a few months away, but you expect a team that is on the rise like the Cavs would be a little more aggressive and active in the off-season. Cleveland fans aren't going to be happy with one trip to the playoffs, the Cavs need to keep moving forward.

Although at this point, I'd be happy to see the move at all.

Yeah, curious to see the Cavs standing pat at this point. LeBron was awesome in the playoffs last year, but with the East improving, he needs help. If Larry Hughes is healthy and back to form maybe that'll be enough, but I wonder how far you can go with Eric Snow and Damon Jones as your PGs.

Wesley wouldn't be an upgrade, either. I'm wondering why they didn't at least talk to Al Harrington. You'd think Harrington would be interested to play with LeBron and a team looking to win a championship should talk to the year's top free agent no matter what.

Yeah Wesley is well past his prime... Harrington would have been a nice fit as a decent defender, rebounder, shooter, and guy that can shoulder some of the scoring load.

I think a lack of cap space is probably holding them back at this point. All the big moves were made last year.

They have enough room to do a couple things at least.

Don't nitpick, just enjoy it while you can; after LBJ leaves/retires/gets traded, the Cavs are gonna go the way of the Barons

I thought the Cavs would be one of the more aggressive teams in terms of building a championship team around Lebron. With the Heat as champions and Detroit and Chicago as major contenders, The Cavs need to make moves now.

Watching the US b-ball team whip Puerto Rico, it struck me that Wade and LeBron will play together when their respective contracts expire. They have to. It is destiny. And the team they'll play for won't be in Ohio.

As if any team could afford that and still have other players.

I cannot recall a time in the history of the NBA that the two best players in the league united on one team in their primes. I just do not see this happening. I may be wrong, but before you go throwing around examples to prove it, remember the criteria:

1. The two absolute best players in the league

2. Uniting after each having established himself as great with another team

3. Doing so when both are in their primes

As exciting as that would be for one set of fans in the NBA, it is not in the league's best interest. That would be like sending Schilling, Ortiz and Manny to the Yankees and letting them knock the crap out of the entire league. Who would enjoy that other than Yankee fans? Better to have two teams with the best players and establish a rivarly that fans all over basketball can enjoy. And guess what? That's what we have right now!

Agreed 100%. What would be better, Bird and Magic on the same team, or the great rivalry they had? Here's hoping they stay where they're at and the rivalry continues to be great.
