DNL's Plan for the 2007 Mets

I think -- not sure, but I think -- I'm finally over the NLCS.

And even if I'm not, it's time to look toward the 2007 New York Mets. If I were Omar Minaya, here's what I'd do. (Hopefully, other ArmchairGMs will, well, play Armchair GM with their favorite team, too.)

Go With What We've Got

My first rule would be simply: Be willing to stand pat (mostly). Re-ink El Duque, Stache, and Chad Bradford. I'd also take Guillermo Mota at a 50-game discount. As for Tom Glavine, keep him if you can, but if not, replace him with Mark Mulder or someone similar.

That means giving Lastings Milledge a chance in the outfield. If the price is right, I'd bring back Cliff Floyd. The only player who has to go is Shawn Green -- he simply can't handle right field any more, and won't displace Carlos Delgado at first.

Plug Holes; Don't Rebuild the Bathtub

I'd take Barry Zito at $70 million over five years. Really. But I don't see much value in most other pitchers. The Mets have plenty of "good-enough" arms to get them to the playoffs, and after that, the luck factor and (hopefully) return of Pedro will be more important than free agent signings. Quite simply, one can't buy a victory in the playoffs no matter how hard you try.

In the same vein, the Mets need to lend a more critical eye to the term "holes." Stache can't hit lefties; he should platoon and be the primary lefty bat off the bench. Endy Chavez is a good 4th outfielder, but he shouldn't start regularly. That means if the Mets decide to go with Lastings Milledge in the outfield -- and I think they should -- they need to ride him out for a full year.

The other corner OF position should be a good defensive role player who you can plug into the #2 or #6 hole. I'd take a low slugging percentage guy if he gave me a strong (.360+) OBP, or I'd take a .335/.475 guy. I don't want Alfonso Soriano. Dave Roberts or Trot Nixon (if healthy) would be good. And again, I'd take Floyd back.

Results

That gives me the following lineup:

  1. Jose Reyes, SS
  2. Paul Lo Duca, C or TBD, LF
  3. Carlos Beltran, CF
  4. Carlos Delgado, 1B
  5. David Wright, 3B
  6. TBD, LF
  7. Jose Valentin, 2B platooned with TBD, 2B
  8. Lastings Milledge, RF

The rotation is a bit more difficult.

  1. Barry Zito or "Young Gun Lotto"
  2. Tom Glavine/Mark Mulder
  3. Orlando Hernandez
  4. John Maine
  5. Oliver Perez

Young Gun Lotto simply means that Brian Bannister, Mike Pelfrey, and maybe Phillip Humber fight it out for the spot. Dave Williams, if retained (and he should be) is also in the mix.

Bullpen pretty much stays the same. While I think Aaron Heilman would be a good starter, I don't think the Mets are in a position to trade him.

When Pedro returns, he'll take the place of whomever is injured. Someone will be. Probably El Duque.

Conclusion

This Mets team won't blow away the NL East. But it probably doesn't have to. But they will be good enough to compete for the division and the wild card. Not favorites, but clear contenders. Because of happenstance, injuries, and the like, is there reason to try and do more? Probably not.

What about Pedro? Where does he fit into your projected rotation? He may well be the Wild Card for the '07 Mets.

I think you plan on not having him until late, and not up to speed until maybe October if at all. You build a team that can make the playoffs w/o him.

I don't think Pedro will be back with the Mets next year. I think the Mets have to plan accordingly.

I think he will be back, but you have to plan as if he is not going to be.

Sorry DNL. If there was ever a year to overreact accordingly, it would be this year. Zito and Mulder should both be signed, if not another free agent. You are correct to not mess with the lineup much, but while we do have a ton of young potential arms, lets give them another year to season. I know they both had their moments, but the mets were a Pedro away from the WS and maybe a Pedro +1 from a championship.

Dear Omar: Keep stockpiling the good, young arms. They are better than most of the expensive crap on the trade market. Maine/Perez/Pelfrey/Humber - be patient, these are all good pitchers.

Why would you take Trot or Roberts over Soriano? Is it only because they would come at a lower value? If Minaya has $ to spend, why not spend it on a 40/40 guy.

Not great devensively, bad teammates...obviously playing for the contract last year. I'd expect a big dip in productivity once he gets that rediculous contract, most likely from the phillies.

I think that the SD trade helps with depth. We get rid of Heath Bell which is huge. I liked Ring, but its not something to cry about. In return we get a righty middle reliever and an outfielder with potential. I have no problem with Shawn Green and Jose Valentin, but both are and should be platoon players. I see no problem with an OF of Milledge, Johnson, Beltran, Chavez and Green. At 2b you'd have to count me in the Julio Lugo camp. He provides speed in the 7 spot and can hit in the 2 spot when LoDuca sits.

Pitching is a big question mark. The fact is that the Mets do not have a signle starter in their 5 man rotation that is set. Glavine will either be in NY or Atlanta and we will know soon. Maine and Perez can man the back end of the rotation. However, Maine is likely a .500 pitcher and Perez's amazing game 7 does not erase his ridiculously bad last 2 years. Humber and Pelfrey have huge upside, but I don't think you can go into a season with that many young and uncertain arms. Pedro is done. Thus, it looks to me that you have to rebuild your rotation. Maybe the solution is to trade Milledge for a pitcher and then trade Heilman for an outfielder.

Maybe the answer it to move Milledge and Humber to Florida for Dontrelle. You then trade Heilman and Carlos Gomez to the Red Sox for Manny.

Lineup 1) Reyes 2) LoDuca 3) Beltran 4) Delgado 5) Wright 6) Manny 7) Lugo 8) Green/Chavez

Pitching: 1) Willis 2) Glavine/Free Agent 3) Maine 4) Duque 5) Perez/Pelfrey

I think Heilman is entirely replaceable. You already have Sanchez and Wagner for the 8th and 9th inning. Adkins, Bradford and Feliciano can take care of the 7th. I would still like to add a true lefty specialist.
