D-Day Thank You

11
Vote

by user Christof

Sixty-two years ago, Allied forces landed in Normandy. The landing was successful, and it was the beginning of the end for the Second World War.

During the fighting, many athletes and sports fans lost their lives. Others were serious wounded. To all who fought, I just want to say THANK YOU. You have given us, all of us, the chance to live free. To watch sports, to write about sports.

At times we do not say Thank You enough, and with the World War II generation nearing the end of their lives, time is running short to do so.

Wow, it seems that Americans care more about this than the Brits... I've not heard it mentioned once on TV/radio today. They've all been saying it's the day of the devil (i.e. 6/6/6)... That was the main headline on the 6am news, "At 6:06 this morning" etc. But agreed, D-Day should be a public holiday.

To the comment above...Like the man said, with out this invasion, we wouldn't even be able to write about sports. Over 29,000 American lives were lost, while several more were wounded. Good article Christof, glad some people pay attention to important things like that.

D-Day changed the tide of WWII. If we had lost that war, do you honestly think we'd have the freedoms we have today? No.

While true, it's still off topic by a large degree. It'd be quite odd if ESPN had a big D-Day article up right now.

Are we also going to celebrate... The Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes)? The dropping of the Atomic Bomb? Why don't we honor the Soviets of WWII, the ones that did much more to win this war than the Americans?

All those events you listed were more than one day, and while we should all appreciate them, what came first? D-Day. If the allies were pushed back into the channel, Germany would have had more time to regroup their forces and unveil all of Hitlers secret weapons. And the Soviets did more to win the war than the Americans? Were the Americans not fighting both the Germans and the Japanese? Thats what I thought...

To be fair, Darrel, the Soviets were actually losing the war until Britain forced the Germans back. As the Germans were losing on the Western Front, Hitler was forced to move some of his men to the West to stop the Brits and French from getting to Germany. The Russian winter defeated Germany a few months later; they were unprepared for the weather. For those two reasons, Hitler lost on both fronts (the switched men were tired and useless by the time they reached France), and it was a matter of time. As for not being able to write about sports. We probably could, but in German. Ich kann nicht so viel Deutsch sprechen...
