D-Backs suffer blow; lose Unit

by Sasha

The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a set back in there play-off run when the club informed people that Randy Johnson would have surgery to repair a herniacted disc and miss the rest of the 2007 season. Johnson who was acquired with cash in the off-season for Luis Vizcaino and two minor leaguers had surgery to repair the same disc in the off-season. Johnson, who has had 3 previous trips to the DL this season, hopes that by having the surgery during the season he will be able to start the season with the team. Johnson had been 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA for the snakes this year.

Maybe it's me, but I just don't see this as much of a setback. The "three previous trips to the DL" statistic seems to speak for itself. The Diamondbacks don't need an aging Hall-of-Famer to be successful. I personally think that the team would be missing out on the playoffs either way.

Randy is just getting fixed up (and mummified) to join his geriatric twin next season in NY.

Am I the only one who thinks this is actually a good thing for the Dbacks?

That is ridiculous, when Johnson was healthy he was their second best pitcher.

When a 44 year old and very surly guy is your second best pitcher, you weren't really that good to begin with were you? Kelsdad, you and I might be the only people inb Arizona to see the D-BrokeBacks for what they really are - Imposters!

I never said this team was going to win the World Series, but based on the fact that it is almost August and they are well in the hunt you can't give up on the season.

You'll say anything just to yell at me. Then again, baseball isn't your best sport.

What this does is force the Dbacks into making a trade. You said yourself the other day about how the Dbacks have overachieved this season and realistically should be seven games below .500 instead of seven over. And their on a seven game winning streak to boot, meaning a week ago they were a .500 team.

Now knowing they can't count on him puts their focus on what they need to do the next ten weeks. I heard today Quentin is being recalled and a trade is pending, not sure if Quentin is replacing who is leaving or if he is in it.

Trust me, this is a good thing, and after the season you'll be telling me I'm right, just like you always do.

They need to trade for hitting, not pitching.

And as far as I can recall the only time I have ever said that you were right was when I was standing to the left of you.

The Unit has been borken for about 2 years now. How can this latest injury really effect the D-Backs?

He had a 120 ERA+ (3.80 raw ERA) for the D-Backs this year...I wouldn't consider that "broken". Unless you meant something different by "borken".

The D-Broken Backs are better off sticking to the plan they had coming into the season, not the one they're dreaming (I stress DREAMING) about right now...

Since its the same disc he had repaired in the offseason, I think he's probably going to call it quits. Hats off to the most dominating pitcher of his era.

He has alreadybeen quoted as saying he "will be back" - so either he knows something we don't or he hasn't realized what we all know already

You think Johnson was more dominant than Pedro? Johnson's best ERA+ was 198, with three other seasons above 180 and three more in the 170s. Pedro had four seasons above 200, including the best single-season ERA+ of all-time, 285 in 2000 (plus two more seasons above 180). For his career, Pedro's ERA+ is 160; Johnson's is 137. I know Randy did it for a longer period of time, but that's not what I think of when I think of "dominating".

Yankees got the best of that trade since Vizcaino has won twice as many games as Johnson and Johnson may be one of those under 300 wins pitchers that makes it into the Hall of Fame like Sandy Koufax did. If he winds up winning 300 games I will be very surprised.

*And in the news day, the Giants & DBacks complete a historical trade. The Dbacks send Johnson's knee cartilage over to San Francisco in exchange for Barry Bonds' lower back disc...

This is not a blow. The Unit sucks. He has for three years. The D-Backs are better without him.

Wrong. He wasn't very good last year, but in '05 and this year he was significantly better than league-average. If that is your definition of "sucking", all but 10-15 pitchers in baseball suck.
