Cy Young talk

Yes it's early I know, but let's do it.

NL Cy Young candidates:

Cole Hamels (9-2 3.47 era 104 K's) Jake Peavy (8-1 1.82 era 103 K's) Brad Penny (8-1 2.18 era 61 K's)

For the NL I'm sticking with what I picked early in the season in Jake Peavy. He's as dominate as I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong, any one fo these three can take the award, but if the season ended right now, Peavy would win it hands down. Batters are hitting only .200 against him this season.

AL Cy Young Candidates:

Josh Beckett (9-0 2.88 era 67 K's) Dan Haren (7-2 1.58 era 76 K's) John Lackey (10-4 2.53 era 71 K's) Justin Verlander (7-2 2.79 era 68 K's)

For the AL it's much harder to choose. I picked Beckett at the season's start, but Haren is definitely making a case for himself. Verlander, coming off his first ever no-hitter is proving to be a dominate pitcher in the AL and is pushing strongly for this award. John Lackey has had more chances by far than the others, but he is the MLBs first 10 game winner and doesn't appear to be slowing down. The Angels offense can sputter at times leaving alot of pressure on him to keep the game close, he seems to thrive on that.

I'll stick with Beckett for the AL and Peavy for the NL.

I wanna take Hamels, but right now you gotta go with Peavy... I'll take Haren in the AL...a 1.58 is ridiculous and practically 1 earned run ahead of everyone else

I agree entierly. I love Hamels, I think he's starting to become what all us Phillie fans dreamed of, but Peavy is just too much right now. He's controlling the NL batters with ease.

Peavy and Haren. Chris Young should get some consideration in the NL too.

How silly of me. I'm sorry for that. Chris Young (6-3 2.38 era 68 K's) should def be up there. While I stick with my pick, consider Young another NL candidate.

Hamels has a good chance of winning the Cy Young, however, it will come down to where the Phils are in August and September as to see if he wins it or not.

CC Sabathia should also be mentioned in the discussion

I agree wholeheartedly with ^^. I don't think this is Sabathia's year, but he'll definitely be in the discussion. He's got a CY in his future at some point.

I hope you're kidding. 6-2 with a 3.42 era and 28 K's? Hardly Cy Young numbers compared to the top 3 Candidates. Way to be a homer. And on CC, I was thinking of putting him in, he'd be the 5th candidate but I dunno. Past few seasons he has dropped off a bit. We'll see after the all-star break.

Bud Selig already guaranteed to George Steinbrenner that Roger Clemens wins the AL Cy Young. It's part of the deal...

He already stole the 2004 NL award so why not 2007 AL.

Haren is hands-down the front-runner in the AL. Penny is on Peavy's heels, but I agree with everyone else that it should be Haren/Peavy at this point. If Ian Snell was on a team that scored runs for him, he could have 9 or 10 wins.

James Shields and Chad Gaudin should get considerations as well.

Not yet they shouldn't. They aren't as dominate asthe ones listed. Let's wait to see if they hold up past the all-star break. I'll be bringing this up again.

Shields is striking out more batters than Haren or Lackey and Beckett has started 3 fewer games than the other candidates, so I think Shields deserves some definite consideration. Gaudin got roughed up tonight and his peripherals don't project him as a very good starter, but he has at least had a low ERA to this point in the year.

You've got to think Johan Santana will rebound and be in the discussion by season's end.

Although if the Sox keep scoring runs for Beckett (and getting him wins), it'll be close. It could come down to how the A's and Red Sox do, and which of them has the better record. CY voters tend to overvalue wins (see: Bartolo Colon a few years back over Johan).

If the season ended today, it would be Beckett and Peavy and both would be pretty close to unanimous. So the race in both leagues isn't really close despite the records of Penny, Haren and maybe Lackey. What the other two guys have done to this point is complete domination, and no one else can say that.

Hamels can, but Peavy edges him based on the fact his EAR is almost 2 runs lower. And I can assure everyone Johan will be in this discussion by season's end.

Haren can't say he has been completely dominant? His ERA is under 2.00.

Ya, Haren has been dominant...if you handed out the award right now, you couldn't give it to guys like beckett or lackey with a straight face... Johan Santana is 6-6 with a 3.19 ERA. 3.19 is very good, but with the twins offense giving him a 6-6 record (and almost 6-7 last night), I'm not sure if he'll get too much consideration (especially with the other sub 3 ERA pitchers in the AL having waaaay better records). I know win/loss record isn't everything, but it is important for the cy young...santana will need to have a good second half (slightly better) adn the twins offense will need to improve

How has Haren not been dominate? The onyl reason I gave the nod to Beckett was because he was 9-0 at the time, he looked better than everyone else and more confident, and he isn't much worse than Haren. Beckett started 9-0 with a sub 3 era. I think Haren will push and win it in the end, but I want Beckett to, and I'll stick with him.

I agree, the Twins offense has been lackluster thus far, which is odd considering you have Morneau and Mauer. Both are very capable of putting up big numbers. Torii Hunter as well. They just need a great leadoff man who can score runs, or a man like Chase Utley who is a jack of all trades.
