Tonight is a big night for Boston Red Sox Nation. Forget Josh Beckett and the 14 wins, put to rest Jonathan Papelbon and his 25 saves, and Manny being Manny is not even a blip on the radar. Tonight "Red Sox Nation" turns it attention to the return of Curt Schilling.
It has been 48 days since we have seen Schilling in a Boston Red Sox uniform, and over that period of time the Red Sox have gone 24-18 while keeping the lead in the AL-East. And although things have been good for the Red Sox a lot has also changed with them since he has been out. Most notably the New York Yankees and the resurgence of their offense and position in the Wild Card and AL East races.
Now granted the Red Sox from top to bottom are a good team and really control there destiny for the rest of this season. But this team and it's fans know that a strong Schilling will tip the scales (no pun intended) that much farther in their quest for a 2007 World Series Title.
Why is curt so important to the Red Sox? It is because he has thwarted the evil empire (twice) most notably (reminder needed of course!) helping the Red Sox come back from a three-game deficit against the New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. Because of this, Schilling is considered a "big-game pitcher". And big game pitchers are always the ones needed to win the BIG GAMES!
He may not carry a super fastball or arm that can work eight or nine innings, but he knows how to pitch and more importantly how to win. So if your looking for something this season that will tell you how the Red Sox will compete as they get into August and September look no further than 10:05pm (est) tonight when Curt Schilling returns to the mound against a good team in Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
I know I will be watching very closely.
