Born on November 14, 1966 in Anchorage, Alaska, Curt Schilling (Curtis Montague Schilling) played for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 19 year career. Schilling broke into the bigs on September 7, 1988 with the Baltimore Orioles, and put up a 3.81 ERA in 75.2 innings pitched in 1991, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Curt Schilling's best season was 2002, when he posted a 3.23 ERA, won 23 games and struck out 316 batters.

It's been a long, borderline Hall of Fame career for the big righty. He made a name for himself in Philadelphia, became a superstar in Arizona, and has been raised to legend status in Boston. His postseason heroics will be talked about for years to come in Red Sox Nation. He has three World Series rings (one with the 2001 Diamondbacks and two with the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox), and has finished second in the Cy Young voting 3 times, but has never actually won it.

Is he a Hall of Famer? Many baseball fans would answer yes. But his 3.46 career ERA would be higher than any current Hall member. And he has only 216 wins in his career. He has had a very good career, and at times, he has been great, but he has not maintained that level of greatness over the course of his entire career. He has stated that he is retiring after the 2007 season, also the end of his current contract with the Red Sox. If he is able to put together two more great seasons before then, he may have a chance, but as of right now he may not be Hall-worthy.

• Curt and his wife Shonda have four kids together: Gehrig (5/27/95), Gabriella (5/22/97), Grant (10/3/99), and Garrison (6/27/02).
• He is a huge history buff (mainly World War II). He collects helmets and knives that were used at that time. He also has 2,000+ books about history in his home back in Phoenix, Arizona.
• He is a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
• Schilling also contributed $1 million to 3 organizations: United Way ($500,000) and the ALS Chapter of Philadelphia and Phoenix ($250,000 each) when he signed a contract extension with Arizona in 2001. Has received numerous honors for his initiatives.
• He was the recipient of the 2001 Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Major League Baseball to the player who best combines excellence on the field with devotion to community service. In that same year, he received the Branch Rickey Award from the Rotary Club of Denver, the Hutch Award from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and the Jim "Catfish" Hunter Humanitarian Award from the North Carolina ALS Association.
• He won the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association Humanitarian Award in 2000 and was selected as the 2002 Philanthropist of the Year by Worth Magazine.
• In 1996, Schilling received the Phi Delta Theta's Lou Gehrig Award, which is presented annually to the major leaguer who best exemplifies the character of the Hall of Famer and fraternity member, and was named as Baseball's Most Caring Athlete by USA Today Weekend.
• Schilling, like many ballplayers, has several superstitions. Some of them are to never step on the foul line when walking to or from the mound, kissing his lucky necklace before he starts pitching, and to warm up at exactly 6:45 pm when starting night games.

During the prime of his career, Schilling was capable of reaching and sustaining speeds of 94-98 mph on his 4-seam fastball. Throughout his career, he has been characterized by a determination to go deep into ballgames, routinely pitching past the sixth and seventh innings. He has combined his endurance with pinpoint control, especially on his fastball. Schilling's "out" pitch is his split-finger fastball, which he generally locates beneath the strike zone (resulting in many swinging strikeouts). He also possesses an above-average changeup, and a decent slider. His four main pitches are so good that he doesn't need to use a curveball in his pitching arsenal. He loves to have the ball when the game is on the line and he is one of the most competitive guys in the game. His control has remained excellent, and he consistently sports one of the best K/BB ratios in MLB, including the highest K/BB ratio of all time.

After a shoulder injury in the 2007 season, Schilling has had to reinvent himself as a finesse pitcher, pitching much more to contact and relying on his control. He fastball now rarely gets above 91 mph.
