Cubs Trade For Nevin

11
Vote

The Chicago Cubs have acquired former Texas Rangers' 1B Phil Nevin, giving up infielder Jerry Hariston. Nevin currently has a $10 million salary. Presumably, the Rangers will be responsible for the bulk of that salary. Nevin is posting a sub-0.700 OPS against right-handers for the fourth time in five years.

This article was updated to reflect the completion of the trade.

Deal is done as per espn. Rangers get Hairston, give Nevin and pay some $. http://sport...y?id=2464915.

Good thing the Cubs were real quick about replacing D. Lee, this should help them take 4th place now.

I'm not sure that Nevin is quite the player he was around the start of the 21st century, but he is certainly going to help the Cubs. It'll be interesting to see how he copes in the field having been playing as DH at Texas.

Nevin helps the team only if he can play like he did in 2004. Unfortunately, it looks like he is closer to his mediocore 2005 stats. Since his OPS of .859 in 2004, he has posted a .699 with SD in 2005, a .573 with TEX in 2005 and a .721 so far this year. If you look at his monthly splits in 2006, his OPS was .926 in April and only .468 in May. He no longer hits well enough to be a starting first baseman and cannot replace the bat of Todd Walker(.820 in 2004, .829 in 2005, .810 in 2006).

Why is Wlaker on his way out? With Hairston gone that only leaves Nefi and he's btter served as a utility man. A good case of too little too late.
