Cuban and the NHL: Perfect Together?

9

by user Christof

It is being reported in several media outlets that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wants to team up with a partnership that includes NFL hall of famer Dan Marino to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Cuban and Marino are both from the Pittsburgh area, and it is being reported that they only want to be part of an ownership group that wishes to keep the Pens in Pittsburgh. The Pens currently play in the oldest arena still in use in the NHL. The Pens need a new arena to compete, however, politics and lack of funding has prevented a new arena from being built in Pittsburgh.

Cuban, known for his outgoing and lively personality, may be just what the NHL needs. The NHL has been a disaster in the area of marketing for decades. If the right answer was X, the NHL would consistently go with Y (see going with no US regular TV contract during the late 1980's, the Sportschannel America debacle, etc.). Cuban can bring his advertising expertise to the NHL and that may lead to an increase in fan base for hockey in the United States.

Only time will tell as to whether Cuban will join the ownership ranks of the NHL. But the thought alone brings hope for a brighter NHL future to all.

The NHL would be signing a deal w/ the devil, but it almost needs to happen. I can only see benefits by getting cuban involved in the NHL. Sure you have to deal w/ his explosive personallity, but most fans like him as an owner (we would all like him to own our team, right knicks fans) and he really energizes the league...

It's a testiment to Cuban that everyone wants him to buy their team.

I would denounce my loyalty to my fave teams if he bought them. I'm that sick of that guy. He's so insecure and such a baby that he needs to make everything about himself. I know his stupid antics distracted the Mavs and hurt them in the finals last year. I prefer to talk about my teams and the players on the field, not the idiotic self promoting owner who likes to see his face on TV.

He can buy the Pens, and then buy the Phils. Buying the Phillies would make me very happy, along with the few hundred fans that the Phils still have. :)

I hope not. I think people have had enough of Mark Cuban. We know Mark, it's all about YOU!

His team, the Mavs, have been NBA title contenders for how many years? Yes, Cuban has an ego, but so does Steinbrenner, so did the former owner of the Niners, DeBartalo. But all of them won, or were constantly in contention to win.

Not because of him though. His coaches and GMs have done a good job assembling talent and drafting. If Mark Cuban drafted Dirk, I'd give him credit for the Mavs success... he didn't. He's just jumped around like an idiot and tried to find ways to get on TV.

Someone hires those guys. Steinbrenner, Debartalo, Cuban, all of whom are/were great business guys. Look at the eagles or pats today, its a testiment to business and how it works in sports.

It is much more than that. Cuban has supported his teams and his players. He makes it so players WANT to play in Dallas. He has done an excellent job in creating an evironment where people want to work.

Wow, I am surprised at some the statements in here. I think Cuban would be great for the Pens. Here we have one of the worst teams in the NHL, constantly threatening to move and teetering in and out of bankruptcy. In comes Mark Cuban, one of the best owners in all of sports. A terrific businessman who will pay to create a winner. I can't imagine a better owner for Pittsburgh.

I would love to see Cuban in the NHL. Could you picture him hopping the glass and running out on to the ice during a fight? Good stuff. I think an owner like Cuban is great for sports. He is the total opposite of most of the stuffed-shirt owners we see today and actually seems to care about his players and winning. I would go as far as to say I would like Cuban to buy the Yankees once George's run is over.

Does he really care about winning? Or does he just care about finding ways to see himself on TV?
