The pitching market is currently thinner than a coked-out Lindsay Lohan. Carlos Silva, whose claim to fame is getting mistaken for Johan Santana by elderly Minnesotans who think all Latin-Americans look alike, is the hot commodity. Carlos freaking Silva! A guy who, when able to make 30 starts, hasn't posted an ERA under 4.00, hasn't thrown 100 strikeouts, and has only once had a BAA under .300 looks to get a $40 million contract.
With no help available, clubs are pouncing early to keep their pensioners savvy veterans.
Curt Schilling has signed on for one more year with the Boston Red Sox.
Schilling, who turns 41 in November, will have a one year deal. He will earn a base salary of $8 million, $3 million in potential performance incentives, and $2 million for maintaining his weight, bringing him to the magic number of $13 million, which he made last season.
The deal makes sense for the Sox. One can never have too much starting pitching. If he is healthy, he probably slots in as the #4 or #5 starter. He has a proven track record of post-season success. It's probably a better bet than putting the same amount of money into Steve Trachsel.
It also makes sense for Schilling. He gets to finish his career where he cemented his reputation as a great pitcher. He will also get the national exposure necessary to help out his blog, his ego, and his production company.
The Padres have also shelled out $10 million to maintain the services of Greg Maddux, 42 in April. Maddux went 14-11 last season with a 4.14 ERA as the Padres' 3rd starter.
The 347 game-winner's contract will also include performance bonuses and a suite on road trips.
No word on whether or not he will be provided a fresh batch of rookies on which to urinate.
