Crocks & Bonds II: The Indictment

by Trizz

Bud Selig is popping bottles right now, is it because "his daughter's" Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series, you wish, is it because the MLB made 6 billion in revenue, possibly but no, Selig is the happiest man on earth because the US Government did what he was petrified to do, and that is end Barry Bonds career.

When it comes to federal indictments, you're guilty until proven innocent. The government doesn't want to waste time and money on trials, the sole purpose is to get a plea deal and be on your way(ask Mike Vick). This is so going in Selig's favor that some may suspect he's somehow involved. This is what he wanted he wanted to keep Barry out of Cooperstown, didn't want him to reach any more milestones, and justify accepting that vandalized ball. Bud Selig is a "pimp" of some sorts, he used Barry, hopped on the bandwagon just in time to watch him break the record and profit from the sellout crowds who hoped to catch #756, he made his money Barry don't have much luster now so he kicks him to the curb.

So what about Barry, the man you love to hate. Does he take the plea, accepts he cheated so 99% of America can yell I told you so? Or, does he think of himself first goes on with the trial he will inevitably lose and risk jailtime and time away from his family. Tough call, Barry is known as a selfish man but then again he came this far, keep the lie til the end Barry. It's likely to be a jury trial and personally I don't see 12 people saying not guilty.

However, the question is why now? Is it because of mystical Mitchell report thats coming out sometime in 2039? Did someone tip them off? Is baseball more important than corrupt corporations and CIA agents? Why Bonds? There's plenty of people that lie to the government (welfare fraud, cheating on their taxes, etc.) but lets put that aside because the number one priority is convicting Bonds...err I mean saving baseball. The government could've killed 10 birds with one stone, they could've indicted Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Palmiero, and Giambi all at the same time.

The case doesn't make sense to me. So Bonds took steroids when it wasn't illegal but wrong nonetheless, lied about it and now is being tried on perjury, granted he shouldn't have lied but at the same time it was none of the government's business and he had to protect his ego. If Bonds slept with a congressman's wife, not illegal but wrong, and asked did he sleep with her, with the congressman watching, he'll probably lie because some things are better left unsaid. I know steroids does taint the game but it was as legal as driving the speed limit, fault MLB not Barry.

The sad part is that it had to end this way, and as a fan of baseball I'm disappointed. Selig has been nothing short of a coward throughout this whole Bonds saga, which personally questions his power as a commissioner. You think Roger Goodell would've let things go this far, Goodell is a d*ck sometimes but you don't question his will. The government shouldn't have to get involved, they are supposed to protect the country not a game with loopholes. When its said and done HR 762 gets *'ed, Barry never makes the HOF and the world celebrates at another great athletes demise.

I totally disagree with almost everything you have to say, but thanks to our horrible federal government you have the right to say it.

The freedom of speech is not a horrible thing. We all are in favor of censorship if we are the ones to decide what does and does not get censored.

You are dead wrong. It is illegal to consume steroids without a prescription.

I sense a lot of emotion transpired when writing this article. I suggest stepping back, review the facts a second or third time and then proceed with your column.

Just a suggestion. And yes, Chachi is 100% correct. You are entitled to your opinion.

Good luck.

I always found the "steroids weren't illegal in baseball" defense hilarious. THEY ARE ILLEGAL IN THE U.S. WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION!

In a sure sign of the Apocolypse, Tyrone and I agree twice in one week. It is ludicrous to say steroids weren't illegal in baseball. Steroids, like Cocaine, are illegal drugs in the united states, although with a proper prescription you can get steroids. However, baseball did not have a testing policy for steroids, thus the roid heads got away free while Coke heads like Steve Howe got suspended from baseball for life (twice. How can a guy get suspended for life twice? makes no sense, but I digress). Barry Bonds is not being punished for using steroids. He is being punished for lying about it. Whether a Federal investogation is fair or not, an individual does not have the choice as to whether he is going to tell the truth or lie. You are required to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Bonds didn't, so he got indicted.

MJD - I blame myself. Must be the newborn at my house crying 24/7 with my 2 year old frazzling my wife that is throwing off my sense of better judgment  : )

How much longer before the feds indict Bonds for income tax evasion? I doubt that 800 lb gorilla disappeared.

He won't do time for that. He'll pay a fine and a penalty plus interest. It WILL be a massive headache for him (well, his accountants) though. Because they'll audit the hell out of him.

Yeah, meanwhile tens of thousands of people are dying every day because they can't get clean drinking water....

I am confused about what your point is?

Is it that you want the Federal Government to investigate why they are thirsty?

Or are you suggesting these people are dying because they too lied to a federal grand jury?

Or are you suggesting that all Federal Investigations cease because people are dying from malnutrition?

Or are you suggesting that we shouldn't care about Barry Bonds because people don't have clean drinking water?

You are a lawyer aren't you, MJD? It's my way of saying there are more interesting (and important) things in the world to ponder than this article.

Who are you kidding? I don't really have a job. I just read the back of magazines looking for Ads for product testing and get 20 bucks a pop. I figured the Internets were anonymous so I would tell people I am a lawyer. As for there being more important things to ponder than this article, I would think that people dying from lack of potable water is more important than anything we write on this website. probably more important than anything I do with my life. Yet life, nor this website, stops because there are more important things to do.

Trizz, you couldn't be more wrong. Barry bonds is being indicted on Perjury and Obstruction of Justice, not his illegal use of steroids. Also, the investigation in which Mr. Bonds supposedly lied in was NOT and investigation into his use of steroids. It was an ivestigation into a nation wide illegal steroid ring. Bonds was a witness and was forced to testify. The government apparently thinks he lied and are now pressing charges. This is not a witch hunt or scapegoating, it's about bringing down the real culprit that is actually hurting this great nation, BALCO.
