Critiquing the Playoff Managers: Day Two

10

by user Timothy Moreland(Bball3345)

Throughout the MLB playoffs, I am going to look back at each game and highlight some of the key strategic moves that were or were not made. Obviously, I have the benefit of already knowing the outcome; however, my opinions will be presented as if I did not know the outcome.

Here is the link to Day One.

Oakland Athletics @ Minnesota Twins

Bottom of the Ninth: Huston Street replaces Justin Duchscherer

Oakland reliever Duchscherer pitched the seventh and eighth innings, retiring six in a row. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the A’s had a 5-2 lead. Closer Huston Street had pitched in Game One, but Macha brought him in to protect the three-run lead.

If I were the manager

I would have brought in Chad Gaudin instead of Street. Gaudin is more than capable of holding a three-run lead. Street had pitched in Game One, so pitching him in back-to-back games means he should not be used in Game Three. I would have saved my bullpen ace, Street, for another day when he may be needed more.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Mets

Top of the Second: Jeff Kent and J.D. Drew are thrown out at the plate

This one goes out to the third base coach, instead of the manager. With Kent on second, Drew on first, and no outs, Russell Martin sent a liner to deep right. Shawn Green fielded the ball and threw to the plate. Kent was gunned down easily at home, but Drew followed in behind him. Lo Duca applied the tag to Drew for the second out at the plate on the same play.

If I were the manager

I would fire the third base coach. Okay, maybe that is an overreaction, but how could he not stop both, if not one, of the runners from being thrown out? Kent was out rather easily, but I can see sending him, as the ball did hit the wall. Drew, however, looked as if he was headed straight for home behind Kent. The third base coach should have held him up. Drew was probably taking things into his own hands when he saw Lo Duca not looking, but someone should have done something to hold him back. I mean, they went from a possible bases loaded situation with no outs to one man on first and two outs.

Unfortunately, the Yankees and Tigers came was postponed, but I had to watch House anyways. As always, feel free to disagree.

If the A's game were a regular season game, I'd agree with you on that bullpen move. But, since this is the playoffs, I think you have to give yourself the absolute best chance to win in every case. Maybe he brings in Gaudin and he only allows a run or two before he switches to Street to close a game, but it's funny how things like that can build momentum and end up burying you. Street's shown himself in the past to be extremely durable. In the college world series just a few years ago, he pitched just about every game, sometimes for as many as three or four innings. I wouldn't be concerned about Street burning out in this series, especially when Duchsherer has been about as reliable as a closer.

What about the Mets/Randolph's decision to let Mota bat? I'm on the fence.

Willie doesn't manage the bullpen that well (It's the Joe Torre curse) so I'm never surprised when he screws up anything related to pitchers.

That is the one I would focus on as well. Mota is more than capable of going 2 innings, but the Mets have a deep bullpen. The problem I saw is that there were 2 outs and no one was warming up in the pen. Still, I think you have to bring Julio Franco in in that position. If he gets a hit the your lead has likely expanded to 5 runs and the guys warming up have that extra time to get ready. If he gets out, you bring one of the guys in and have the other keep warming. I just don't see how you send Mota to the plate in that position when you have a guy like Franco on the bench.

I thought it was the right move. He'd already used 2 bullpen guys already that game. Mota was pitching well. It made perfect sense at the time to let him hit.

I actually thought that Randolph did a great job with the Bullpen. He brought in Feliciano and Bradford in situational positions effectively. Heilman came in to face a few hitters and did well. Mota was lights out in the 7th. With a 4-1 lead, you would rather have a lights out pitcher then a few more runs. He was zoned in until a cheap base hit and a throwing error messed with his mind. Wagner closed. I think Randolph did much better then Grady Little in his first playoff game as a head coach.

It wasn't horrible in this situation, although I'd be more inclined to bring in somoene else there. I was just saying that Randolph in general is not brilliant with the pen
