Craig Monroe, thanks for comin' out

Detroit Tiger Craig Monroe tied a Major League Baseball record today by striking out five times in a nine inning game, almost single-handedly giving Milwaukee's Ben Sheets the four strikeouts he needed to reach the 1,000 strikeout plateau. Sheets struck out Monroe three times on his way to becoming just the second Brewer pitcher to reach the mark (Teddy Higuera being the first).

This brief article is for you, Mr. Monroe, for becoming yet another victim of single game at-bat futility and once again proving to us all that the hardest thing to do in sports is hit a little ball with a 34 inch wooden bat.

Actually, striking out five times is way harder than hitting the ball once.

Andruw Jones did it earlier this year against the Red Sox. It's a good thing he hasn't gotten too fat to patrol the outfield like he once did...oh wait...never mind.

Yeah, and all five of Andruw's were swinging.

Hank Aaron's career high strikeout game was three, which he did 19 times. Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams high was also three..each did it once. Isn't that ridiculous?

Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Roberto Clemente's high game total is four, with Mantle's eight times the highest total of the four.

And hitters are better today. Sure they are.

Joe Dimaggio once stuck out 13 times....in a season, over 541 AB.

According to the Baseball Almanac, only Dick Allen has done this twice. Something to shoot for if you're Monroe, Jones or Dunn.

Here's a fun fact too: Joe Sewell struck out only four times all season in both 1925 and 1929, while playing in 155 games in 1925 and 152 games in 1929. That's right, four times in 608 and 578 at-bats, but over 50 players have eclipsed that in five.

The record for a game is six, done, I think, six times. All as you might expect were extra inning games, and the only one to do a six for six was Geoff Jenkins.

www.retrosheet.org under top individual game performances. Doing research for the team page I'm currently writing, 1965 Minnesota Twins, their team record for K's in a game is five, done four times. Bob Allison, Sandy Valdespino, Bobby Darwin and Roy Smalley. Allison was the only one to do it in a nine inning game.

Wow, that's not even listed on Baseball Almanac, what a sham. It actually says he went 0-7 with six whiffs on the box score...I remember that game, 17 inning, 1-0 marathon against the Angels that I stayed up and watched till like two in the morning. Sheets would've had a no-hitter had the game ended in the ninth I believe.

You're right. It was Alex Gonzalez who had the six for six. Thanks Corey.

Andruw Jones has more strikeouts than hits with 8 to 5 hits in last ten games and is hitting .128 in last ten games...5 for 39. Is hitting .215...still teams will line up to sign him this fall.
