Cpcp's 2006 MLB Playoff Picks

by user Ross K.

Everyone else is having a go with their MLB playoff picks, so I figured I would, too.

First, let's look at my beginning of the season picks. Now, before you look at these keep in mind that the Cleveland Indians were tearing it up the first week of the season and I got a little bit excited.

AL East - Boston Red Sox
AL Central - Cleveland
AL West - Oakland A's
Wildcard - Toronto Blue Jays

NL East - New York Mets
NL Central - St. Louis Cardinals
NL West - Los Angeles Dodgers
Wildcard - Houston Astros

AL Champ - Cleveland
NL Champ - Houston

World Series Champ - Cleveland

Now, besides the whole Indians thing, most of those picks aren't too bad. Boston and Oakland are both leading their division in the AL and the Mets and Cards are right so far in the the NL. Houston is four out of the wildcard and Toronto is five and a half out. So four correct, two close and one (Detroit Tigers) completely unpredictable and the NL is always up for grabs because they're all pretty bad.

Here are my second half adjustments on my picks:

AL East - Red Sox (Better overall than the Yanks, especially with the NY injuries)
AL Central - Tigers (I think Detroit will take two of three from the Sox and keep on rolling)
AL West - Oakland (Best of the worst)
Wildcard - Chicago White Sox (Sheff and Matsui will be back too late for the Yanks to get to the playoffs)

NL East - Mets (No challengers, they're on easy street)
NL Central - St. Louis (Cincy won't catch up here.)
NL West - San Diego Padres (Best of the worst)
Wildcard - Cincinnati Reds

AL Champ - White Sox
NL Champ - Mets (No other NL team is this complete)

World Series Champ - Mets

I hate to claim a New York team champ, but at least it's not the New York Yankees. Because so many races are so close, I'm obviously not 100% confident in these, barely 50%. But I call them as I see them and this is the way it looks now.

Can we get you drug tested?? Just kidding (not really) - You know there's no way the Mets win the World Series (or even go for that matter) - It happens every year... there's a clear cut dominant team in July that falls apart by September- my nominee this year is the Mets - big talent rosters rarely put it all together.

I'd hold off until after the trading deadline to make second half predictions. With so many tight races, a few trades may shift the balance of power in one direction or another.

I think chances are some sort of Sox will win the AL this year. I can't see a team in the West in the World Series, I agree with you there.

Only two teams even have a shot in the NL, and that's the Mets and Cardinals, and the Cards have owned the Mets the past few years. It's going to be a tight series, but I'm going to pull for the Cards just because the Mets are the Mets, even if they do have David Wright.

Houston is still a dangerous team in my eyes. If they can pull off another run to the wildcard, their starting pitching of Pettitte, Clemens, and Oswalt can knock off the Mets or the Cards.

Andy Pettitte is barely a shell of what he once was. He's given up the third most runs in the NL to this point. With an ERA of 5.00, and an 8-9 record, that certainly isn't enough ammo to give the NL Central competition a run, regardless of the Cardinals. The Astros have 3 guys in the top 15 in the NL with most earned runs, all have ERAs of 5 or over, two have them have over 20 starts. That isn't the pitching staff that can compete. Clemens is an upgrade, but with Brad Lidge (5.73 ERA) and a paltry offense (still), I don't understand where all the wild card talk is coming from.

And once the playoffs start, every pitcher ERA will be 0.00 and every batter's AVG. will be .000

As those players have been good in the past, who knows when they can turn it around and start firing again. The names of Clemens and Pettite are two you wouldn't like to face in a crisis, or in Game 7 of a series.

But it's the same pitcher and the same batter who had those ERA's and BA's.

kudos for your efforts but the mets aren't going to win the world series. it's an AL team that wins. my two cents.

whether or not the series is won by the AL, the Mets won't be there either way. Ask the Spurs, the Colts, etc...

My only problem is your comment that the Pads are the best of the worst in the NL west. The NL west for most of the year has had four or more teams above .500 they have gone through a rough patch as of late but they have been one of the better divisions. Oh and this is mostly becouse I'm a fan of them but the D-backs will win the division.
