Cowboys Statement Win

by Warden

With a decisive 34-10 road victory over the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears, the Cowboys moved their record to an unblemished 3-0 to remain atop the NFC East and make a case as one of the NFL's elite teams.

Tony Romo went 22-35 for 329 yards and 2 TDs, and the Dallas defense picked off beleaguered Bears QB Rex Grossman 3 times. WR Terrell Owens may have had his best game in a Cowboys uniform, hauling in 8 passes for 145 yards, including one 89-yard drive where he accounted for 70 yards on 4 catches. Rising star RB Marion Barber rumbled for 102 yards on just 15 carries, reaching the end zone twice, while TE Jason Witten caught 6 passes for 90 yards.

As good as the defense looked, holding the Bears offense to 239 total yards, the story of the game was once again Romo, whose mobility and poise in the pocket was on display all night, flinging passes while on the run from every conceivable angle. Romo's precision passing overcame not only some costly drops by his own WRs, but 100 yards on 12 penalties handed out by a visibly incompetent officiating crew.

No less an authority than John Madden was heard raving about Romo all night, at one point referring to him as "Superman" -- and who could blame him. In all 3 Dallas games so far -- wins over the Giants, Dolphins and Bears -- Romo has been indisputably the best player on the field each time. The 27-year-old Romo has become one of the great NFL stories of recent years, an undrafted free agent from obscure Eastern Illinois has risen to the top of the QB heap, with his name now regularly mentioned in the same breath as household names like Peyton Manning, [[Tom Brady] and Brett Favre. Romo has thrown for 860 yards, with 8 TDs against 2 INTs (one on a tipped pass), and his passer rating after 3 games stands at 111.9, tied for 2nd in the NFL behind Brady with Carolina QB Jake Delhomme. Another telling stat is that in the Super Bowl era (since 1966), only Kurt Warner, with 3,213, has thrown for more yards than Romo's 3,172 in his first 12 overall starts.

Last night, the Dallas defense looked aggressive and played angry. LBs DeMarcus Ware and rookie Anthony Spencer combined for 3 sacks, and CB Anthony Henry picked off his 3rd and 4th passes of the year, taking one back all the way for a game-clinching TD in the 4th quarter.

The Cowboys next two games look very winnable -- at home against the 0-3 St. Louis Rams and on the road versus the also winless Buffalo Bills -- setting up a potential showdown of unbeaten teams in week six at Texas Stadium against the New England Patriots, who have outscored their three opponents by an overwhelming 114-35. So far Brady has completed a head-shaking 80 percent of his passes on the season, aided by the resurgent WR Randy Moss and newcomer Wes Welker.

Speaking of stellar QB play the numbers put up in yesterday's games were through the roof, resembling the laissez-fair "defenses" of the old American Football League. Either the defenses were resting or it has just become too easy to complete passes, but a glance at the stat lines shows a remarkable trend. Nine QBs threw for over 300 yards on Sunday, led by Detroit's Jon Kitna's 446 yards on 29-46 passing. Donovan McNabb feasted on the Lions' weak secondary to the tune of 381 yards on 21-26 passing. Brady was 23-29 for 311 yards and his usual weekly 4 TDs. Even Atlanta's Joey Harrington got into the act, completing 31-46 for 361 yards in a losing effort versus Carolina. Kurt Warner -- remember him -- came off the bench for Arizona in relief of a struggling Matt Leinert (9-20 for 53 yards), hitting on 15 passes in just 20 attemps for a gaudy 258 yards. And Houston's Matt Schaub is justifying his huge offseason contract, hitting on 27-33 throws for 236 yards versus the Colts. There just weren't a lot of incomplete passes on this Sunday, is the point I'm trying to make.

I'll admit Im obviously a huge Cowboys fan, but I was very quiet about Sunday's game ecase i did not expect Dallas to win. What they did on Sunday night was establish a trend. The Cowboys are a second half team and they play better and harder in the third and fourth QT.

Bottom line is the DB's still have to step up and be able to make the catches that go for interceptions. In addition the pass rush on Grossman never gave him a chance.

I dont think so, he threw some on the run and scrambling for life, but he also threw a lot that went to his third and fourth option meaning he had time to stand in the pocket and look around

JuTMSY4: Romo being the 3rd best QB in the NFC East just might be the most absurd statement I've read so far today. Jason Campbell played like crap yesterday. The guy's decision making resembles Quincy Carter on Quaaludes. His release is molasses slow, and he made 3 or 4 bonehead decisions in the 4th Quarter. Campbell is an average QB at best. I'll give you McNabb might still be better, but would anyone in their right mind -- which leaves you out, by the way -- trade Eli Manning for Tony Romo? All the Cowboys haters have years of misery ahead of them watching Romo grow into the next great franchise Dallas QB. Enjoy!

I agree while Im not as harsh on Campbell he has played just about as much as Romo 9 starts to Romo's 13 or 12 now and Campbell is no where near the level that Romo is.

Although I do agree with Madden and Ive preached this for a few season... What do the Bears turn to if they bench Rex. Griese is okay. But lets be honest he's not gonna sling the ball around for too many victories himself.

Romo is good, Dallas is good, but 3-0 doesn't guarantee anything as we all know. their secondary is the weak link and will continue to get targeted. Still a lot to be excited about for Dallas fans. I might say it a million more times but damn I love to watch Marion Barber. I thought Maroney was going to be doing this stuff this year but instead its MB, the #1 RB in the league so far this year

I have to admit that of all the games I have watched this year, Dallas' dismantling of the Bears was the most impressive. The Bears vaunted defense simply could not find a way to cover Owens. With the NFC as weak as it is, it might be the Cowboys who got 16-0.

I just call 'em like I see 'em. I have no rooting interest in the NFC. I did not count the Cowboys as a real team in the NFC. I did not believe in Romo, and I certainly didn't believe in a Wade Phillips team. I must admit that I missed the 1st half of the game last night (I was watching that HBO show which is basically just porn). But, in the second half the vaunted Bears defense had no answer to Romo and TO. They even gave up a bomb to some guy I have never heard of who also threw a monster block after a TO catch. Benson answered the question as to whether the Bears let the right RB go (an astounding no), and the Cowboys special teams made Devin Hester look like a 1 year wonder. For all the talk of the Bears injuries, you can't ignore the fact that the Cowboys were missing Terry Glenn. I kept asking myself (indeed I wrote it during the liveblog) why don't the Bears triple team Owens. I mean if the Bears put 1/3 of their defense on TO, 1/3 of their defense on Witten and 1/3 of their defense committed to stopping the run, I have to imagine that they could stop this offense. But no matter the situation, Romo escaped, TO was open or Julius Jones hit the hole. Simply put, it should not surprise anyone that the Cowboys defense was able to handle the Bears offense. The Bears offense is not good. But the complete domination of the Cowboys offense over the Bears defense and the Cowboys special teams over the Bears special teams was shocking and made a believer out of me.

Uh, I'll take Wade Phillips at this stage over Joe Gibbs. The Redskins looked like a horribly coached team yesterday. And as far as the Cowboys secondary being horrible, I hope they play that horrible all year, with 7 INTs in the last 2 games! First of all, we were missing our best CB, Terence Newman, until yesterday; Anthony Henry has 4 picks and once led the NFL with 11 when he was with Cleveland; Ken Hamlin is only 26 and is a great complement to Roy Williams. You keep telling yourself we stink, just don't let the facts get in the way. And Steel Town, are you still not sold on Romo? When Rothlisberger has a game like any of the 3 Romo has played so far, get back to us, okay. Maybe the Steelers will have to play a real team any week now.

Get back to me when romo goes 15-1 in a season or wins a superbowl. Oh wait Romo has had a couple of decent games in his career I guess he's gonna lead the Cowboys to the promisland. After 13 career games you've got this guy in the hall of fame already, get real Romo is not the second coming of Peyton Manning.

Anyone who is trying to say the STeelers are a bad team is flat out wrong. They Steelers are back to doing what they do best, rushing the ball well and attacking on defense. Now, that being said, I like the Cowboys road to Arizona a lot more than I like Pitts. NE, Indy, BMore just to name a few makes for a dangerous road. Where as GB, maybe NO and well I cant honestly think of another team is a lot easier for the cowboys.

I agree, the teams they played are bad, but the steelers don't make the schedule. It gets real tough after the by week and thats when our real test comes. But, with the Bears not looking so hot this year, who have the Cowboys played, or the Pats since the Chargers look awful, or Indy? There are only a handfull of good teams to go around, and most of them have not reallly been challenged so far this year

That's okay, Steel Town. The 49ers were 2-0 going into your house, and Cleveland did put 51 on the board the week after you played them. As a Cowboy fan, it's hard for me to praise anything about the Steelers -- you know, those Super Bowl losses in the '70s still sting all these years later! -- but nobody looks forward to playing the physical Steelers and their running game. And as a Norv Turner basher, I am loving the Chargers' struggles, although a lot can change in a few weeks. I think we would both settle for a rematch of the 1995 Super Bowl, no matter which way the game ends up!
