Counsell, Gonzo gone

Yesterday was the last day of regular season but it was also the last day of an era. In all the years before now, since 1998, the Diamondbacks have always had at least one member of the historic 2001 world series team on the roster, but this may be different (the D-Backs could still bring back Miguel Batista) next year. Yesterday marked the end of Luis Gonzalez's and Craig Counsell's tenure as D-Backs. I went to Chase Field (for the first time, and yes its embarrassing) yesterday and I was amazed every time Counsell or Gonzo walked on the field huge applause.

So Counsell walks on the field to bat in the bottom of the first and standing ovation, and he flies out to right. Gonzo walks up and gives former owner Jerry Colangelo, former GM Joe Garagiola Jr, and out going president Rich Dozer, a hug. He then went on to go 0-4.

In the fourth inning number four Craig Counsell hits his fourth homer of the year to lead off the inning (any one else see the 444 thing). That was the only hit that either one had.

Counsell had many a chance in the field and made a couple of great plays. Gonzo had one opportunity.

In the bottom of the ninth Bob Melvin sent in Miguel Batista to pitch and after he threw one pitch Craig Counsell was taken out and he got his curtain call. Two pitches later Gonzo was taken out and he got his ovation. And after Miguel Batista got one out he was taken out and he got a tentative ovation.

If you want to know what this was like to be a fan and see these guys go imagine you are a Yankees fan at Lou Gehrig's last game. That is the only thing that I can think of that is close to what happened here. Where the man who is the organization leaves the organization.

Bah. Gonzo was probably on 'roids the only few seasons he was any good. That '01 team was a bunch of mercenaries... and when the fans didn't show up, Colangelo had to blow up the team.

When did it become Chase Field, anyway? Did BankOne get bought out? I always thought that municipally-funded stadiums ought to have a municipal name of some sort anyway... why owners get to cash in on naming rights for parks they didn't build baffles me... but I digress...

Counsell is a great hustle guy, but the DBacks need to keep getting younger, and until they become more profitable, they need to think cheaper, too.

Remember the one time the D'Backs got younger rookies they lost their butts, and were so far in last place, they couldn't get out. NO, the D'Backs don't need the get more and more young rookies, they need balance with veterans showing them the way to play. Being in Tucson is one thing but this is Major League a lot different. The veterans calm the rookies down & show them how to deal with playing the right way. Mona

Look I understand that Gonzo might have been on steroids. But unless you are a Diamondbacks fan you can't understand what it is like to lose the face and hart of the team.

I think they will get over it rather quickly...

Yeah because no other team has ever lost the face and "hart" (or heart) of their favorite team. How could anyone else identify with such a thing? I mean, the Indians have went through Thome, Manny, Vizquel, Colon, the Alomars, Albert Belle... but none of them were Gonzo quality. How will you ever go on?

It does look like the end of another era. With Counsell and Gonzo gone who will be the veterans at infield (don't tell me Hudson, I'm not going there, as it was Counsell who taught Hudson), and outfield to show these rookies just "how to play the game"? Mona Dasy

Hudson was one of the best defensive players in the majors before moving to Arizona. I don't think it is accurate to say "Counsell taught Hudson."

Hey Sports fans: I don't know about you but Counsell, though 36, still has a lot of peskiness as an infielder in him, and from what Counsell says the rookies learn by watching the veterans, that's how he learned. And Brewers have got a "one of a kind" of veteran in Counsell.

Though it may be true about Hudson being a good defensive player, however did your star Hudson ever be a double playing machine like Counsell, if so I never heard of it.
