Could Some One Clarify The Strike Zone?

As most of you who have read my posts, know I am a homer! I love the Red Sox no doubt. So please don't take this as a rant or an excuse.

But what was home plate umpire Brian Gorman looking at last night...clearly about 12 pitches to both the Red Sox and Indians were AWFUL calls!

Travis Hafner had two pitches called strikes that hung off the plate, and Coco Crisp had a pitch that should have been ball four, about 1 foot off the plate, called a strike.

Almost anytime a batter went 0-2, the next pitch regardless was a ball, and almost every batter that went 3-0, it was called a strike. And if you don't believe me, find a friend who has TIVO, and go through the game like I just did, and see for yourself.

It was horrendous! I would have to say, however, the plays in the field were called great! The DP the Indians turned in the first, was clearly an out, and on the DP the Red Sox almost turned in the 5th, Hafner was safe.

It's just sad to see poor pitch calls at the plate...I mean even Tim McCarver saw it, and frankly that's a miracle in itself!

I will say however, the Indians once again took advantage of their opportunities, and did things when they needed to.

Been a good series so far and I hope my Red Sox can knuckle up here and do a bit better!

Peace and Happiness, GO SOX! -Michael http://www.bosoxbuzz.com/ http://bosoxbuzz.blogspot.com/

yea Mike, i was there. The calls looked worse in person.

I actually tried to start a LA-SIK chant for the umpires but it didn't really catch on.

This post-season has been rough as far as balls/strikes. CC Sabatia averaging ~1.7 walks per 9 has walked 11 in 2 games. something just doesn't seem right there. Dice-K wasn't too far off on a lot of those called balls either.

For once I was glad that Fox played PitchTracker after almost every single pitch. That was pathetic. Pitchers during Gorman's games this season had had the fourth-highest ERA in baseball. And Jacobs Field is a Questec park to boot!

The strike zone is whatever the umpire wants it to be. Or union leaders for that matter...

As an Indians fan, I agree. Strike zone, if there was one, was a little shady. But at least it was consistently shady. GO TRIBE!

I didn't think that it was consistently shady... there were just bad calls and an inconsistent strike zone...

I agree with Falcon here...i have no issues with a large zone or a small one as long as its established... Gorman was far from consistant and when i was mentioning it all last night both of my buddies (1 sox and 1 yanks fan) agreed...he was simply off the wall and not consistant...one times it was a strike, next pitch in that area was a ball...

For a 48 year old umpire who has been umpiring for 17 years Gorman sure made some bad calls. I particularly noticed a pitch made to Coco Crisp that was a called third strike that was clearly off the plate. I think umpires should call the pitches by the rulebook not by their interpretation of what the strike zone should be. At least players would know what to expect if all umpires had the same strike zone.

I mentioned this to Mike on his other site but may as well post it here, too...the pitch f/x data says that the strike zone wasn't really as bad as it looked- it was pretty consistent although shifted a bit. Fox's pitchtracker is useless- it's set no narrow it doesn't even cover the plate.

Umpires are always going to have their individual interpretation (high/low/left/right) of the zone, but nobody wants a rulebook strike zone. If pitches at the upper end were actually called strikes it would be a disaster, so they shave a little off there and give some extra off both sides of the plate. Players know that, it's pretty consistent across the league.
