Could Barry Bonds Sign with the Angels

Despite the rumors, The Beast feels that Bonds will not be in an Angel uniform next season.

Last week, Giants slugger Barry Bonds filed for free agency. The Giants and Bonds have begun negotiations, but the Giants might not be the only team in the mix.

Reportedly, Bonds would prefer to play for an American League club that would be close to his Beverly Hills home. Only two clubs fit that description, the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels. While Bonds may want to be playing in Anaheim, it seems that the Halos have no plans to pursue the controversial outfielder who only needs 22 home runs to break Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755.

The only way the Angels would consider the 42-year-old Bonds, who has achy knees, a sore elbow and is under federal investigation for perjury and tax evasion, is if they fail in their efforts to acquire a big bat through free agency or trade, and if Bonds is even available in February.

Whoever takes him will suffer through a season of media, circus animals and losing. He needs a manager who won't put up with his crap. Let him get the record, fade off into the sunset, and disappear. Lou Piniella? Cubs? He could play 100 games, hit his 22 homers, and go away.

I agree. Any team that signs Bonds better know what they are getting into. Sure, There will be a windfall in dollars, especially as Bonds closes in on Hank Aaron. But the media attention will multiply four-fold, the steroid stigma will arrive in Bonds' new city, that team's front office will have to account for the steroid issue, and Bonds' arrival will likely split the fan base down the middle. Don't forget that Bonds was beloved in San Fransisco long before the allegations surfaced and Giants fans were generally supportive of him because of the tenure and the accomplishments. In a new city, that likely won't be the case because every baseball city outside of San Fran hates him already. And Barry himself will likely split the clubhouse down the middle because that's what he does.

But any National league chance (including San Francisco) would take a huge risk in signing Barry for all the reasons listed above in addition to his physical state - he can no longer cover any ground in the outfield and doesn't run the bases particularly well.

Good luck to whoever takes this leap of faith. Hope you know what you're getting into.

I've heard people saying Bonds and the Tigers are a perfect mix. I have to say, I don't see it. Leyland has managed him before, but that was before Bonds became the walking media circus that he is today, and that is not the kind of thing that would be welcome on a Leyland ballclub. I don't think Bonds would be content to play DH, which is the only placed he'd fit on a team built for defense and fundamentals. Speaking of fundamentals, I don't think Leyland would be that interested in a slugger that couldn't leg out a single even if he put forth the effort.

If Bonds were willing to play DH, it would be a great move for the Tigers as a team. Their offense would suddenly find it much easier to score runs if they had Bonds in the lineup.

I could be wrong, but if I recall, Bonds and Leyland didn't get along that well in Detroit. I think the Tigers need a veteran left-handed power hitter, but I don't think Bonds is the answer (what about a healthy Sean Casey? He seems to be a good fit for the Tigers).

No way he does that! Not 22 HRs shy of Aaron. The reason he used the roids was to break the record.

Well I don't think he could adjust to AL pitching and no other NL would want him so ya I agree he resigns or retires.

He didn't use the roids to break the record. He used the roids, allegedly, because McGwire and Sosa were using the roids, allegedly. He knew he was better than them, so he thought he could level the playing field.

forget about the roids or whatever it is that you think bonds is taking. the world is FULL OF CHEATERS, sports is FULL OF CHEATERS, that does not justify anything, but from a numbers standpoint bonds would make the tigers a better team BUT.... as we saw from the dmitri young incident the tigers wont put up with clubhouse controversy. so if they sign bonds or not is up to management and bonds.
