Corporate America Strikes Again

In another attempt to turn the United States into one large billboard, the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a deal with the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, which calls for all White Sox weeknight home games to begin at 7:11pm.

Margaret Chabris, a spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, said the company has been trying to develop sponsorships with other teams and entertainment venues. The Chicago area was targeted because of its more than 180 7-Eleven stores.

"Every time the media announces the game's start time it will be a gentle reminder of our sponsorship," Chabris said.

First, they sold the stadium naming rights to U.S. Cellular, nullifying a century old tradition by using the name of Mr. Charles Comiskey. Now, they sell the starting time to the games? Will MLB get a cut of this because they'll have to adjust the schedules of every team that plays the White Sox?

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I liked sports better when the stadiums were named after founders and important causes, and the teams were worth more than the players. Does anyone know how many of the stadiums are named after corporate sponsors? And who has had multiple names? Enron went up in smoke, Bank One was bought by Chase, etc.

Thank god the Bears decided to keep the Soldier Field name...

This reminds me of the time a Fudge company almost bought the Packers and moved them to San Francisco... San Francisco Fudge Packers just isn't right... I'm glad it didn't happen. I wish that Pink Taco Restaurants would have won the naming rights of the Arizona Cardinals new stadium...

I don't have a problem with this -- in fact, I like it. Money for the team. Gives them an incentive to keep their fans, because 7-11 could have found another team to give money to. That means the some of the money will go to improve the fan's experience. And that money isn't coming out of the fan's pocket. Win/win.

That's a great point DNL. It isn't something the fans actually have to deal with (other waiting one extra minute for games to start). Unlike some recent stadium names, this move shouldn't upset fans' sensibilities or make them question the "Evil Corporate Monster's" place in the game. Good move.

They're gonna tinker with the clock to make sure all the games start at "wink, wink" 7:11

For a while there Cleveland had it going pretty well with Gund Arena, Jacobs Field and Cleveland Browns Stadium. That ended with Quicken Loans Arena and will continue its downward spiral when the naming rights for Jacobs Field come up this year or next. Cleveland Clinic Field? That's about the best we can hope for. I do think CBS will retain its name for some time to come but eventually everyone gives in when money is involved.

CBS sponsors the field? What happens when another network get the game there? (I'm kidding)

Well, it might still be called Soldier Field, but literally half the stadium seating is named the "Cadillac Club" it's only a matter of time....that being said, the US Army and National Guard sponsor NASCAR teams, why couldn's all the armed forces get together to buy sponsorship rights at Soldier Field?

gotta love that the Armed Forces spend tax money to advertise - (now that I'm too old, have kids, could fake an injury/move to Canada) BRING BACK THE DRAFT and save the advertising $

the games normally start at 7:07pm so the difference of 4 minutes is negligible. i like the deal, it doesn't really hamper anything and both the ballpark (and thus the fans) and the company win.

In an effort to increase marketing in the US, Osama Bin Laden has reached an agreement with the Yankees and all home games will start at 9:11.
