The Commonwealth Cup is an annual football game played by the instate rivals of the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI or Virginia Tech). While the rivalry between the two schools dates back over 100 years with over 85 games played between the two teams, the history of the Cup has been brief.
The Commonwealth Cup came into existence in 1996. The goal was to elevate the status of the in-state rivalry between the respected programs to the level of other major colligate football rivalries around the country.
The Commonwealth Cup is a four foot tall trophy made of marble and cherry-wood, and weighs over 100 pounds. The top of the trophy is silver plated, and showcases the names of both schools. The trophy also shows the scores of all 86 games played throughout the rivalry with space to expand as the rivalry continues. On the front panel of the trophy there is a map of the Commonwealth of Virginia with the cities of Charlottesville, and Blacksburg (the homes of both schools) marked by stars. The trophy resides in the trophy case for the duration of the year.
Virginia Tech currently leads the commonwealth cup series 7-3.
Typically the game between the rivals is played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving with home field advantage rotating each season.
