Columbus Clippers No Longer Home of AAA Yankees

9
Vote

The Columbus Clippers announced recently that the New York Yankees were looking for new options for a location for their AAA ballclub and that the Clippers were going to take the opportunity to look for another team as well.

Wednesday the Clippers found their match.

The Clippers signed a two-year deal to be the new AAA home of the Washington Nationals. The deal ends a relationship with the Yankees that has lasted for decades.

The Nationals' top farm club was previously in New Orleans - part of the Pacific Coast League - since 1995.

The shorter contract is believed to be so that the Clippers - who will retain their nickname and continue to play in the International League - will have a chance to pursue an affiliate agreement with the Cleveland Indians or Cincinnati Reds after the 2008 season. The Indians' and Reds' AAA clubs are typically the only series that feature any sellouts at Cooper Stadium.

The Clippers are planning to open a new ballpark in Columbus' Arena District (adjacent to Nationwide Arena, the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets) beginning with the 2008 season.

It seems like this off-season Triple A is playing musical affiliates.

for the most part, this is nothing new... maybe the Yankees will go back to having Kansas City be their minor league affiliate...

Kansas City has a great thing going with the T-Bones, I don't know if they'd mess with it.

I'm thrilled about this for two reason. One, because I don't have to half-hate the Clippers because they're a bunch of mini-yankees and Two, because the mini-Indians could soon end up being here full-time and not just for one series a year.

Minor league teams change affiliations a lot. I remember a story once where a AA team changed affiliates between seasons, but someone from the old team was traded to the new team -- and therefore, didn't go anywhere!
