4-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux vs. rookie Jason Hirsh, each making their debut for their teams. Some may not consider this a fair match-up. But, you guessed it: Hirsh was the victor.
Kazuo Matsui homered in the third for the initial lead. Terrmel Sledge matched the feat to tie the game in the fifth.
But Colorado took the lead for good in the sixth after playing some smallball and a wild pitch by Maddux allowing Matsui to score. Maddux fell apart, then giving up a home run to Matt Holliday with Todd Helton on base.
The Rox almost gave away the game in the ninth when Brian Fuentes gave up a home run to Khalil Greene with Mike Cameron on base after being hit by a pitch by Fuentes. But Fuentes then collected himself and got two strikeouts to earn a save and ruin the home opener for the Padres.
