Aaron Cook (0-0) of the Rockies went a complete game, nine innings, giving up five hits, four walks and a solo home run mistake in the eighth to Jose Cruz (.400). Colorado's LaTroy Hawkins (0-2) came out of the bullpen and earned his second loss for the season. Kevin Kouzmanoff (.143) earned the game winning RBI with a single to knock in Khalil Greene (.320). The rookie Kouzmanoff is in a early season slump after being traded in the past offseason for Padres' popular second basemen Josh Barfield. "I was looking for a good pitch to hit and I got it and I hit it the other way," Kouzmanoff said during a post-game interview while Marcus Giles and Clay Hensley smashed shaving cream pies into his face.

Jake Peavy performed well for the Padres over seven complete innings giving up just 5 hits, two walks and one run with three strikeouts. The bullpen, in three innings, gave up just two walks and Scott Linebrink earns the win.
The Padres take two of the three in the series from the Rockies with all three games being won by just 1 run. The total score for the series is San Diego 8, Colorado 7. San Diego proved they can win the close games at the end with their bullpen. Starting pitching for both teams was excellent, but the major factor was the Rockies bullpen and the cold bats of the Rockies. Coming off a combined 21 runs in three games at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Rockies struggled to combine hits and cash in on scoring chances.
San Diego welcome the San Francisco Giants and former manager Bruce Bochy for a three game series at home. Colorado heads up the coast for the home opener series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies are now 4th in the division at .500 and 1.5 games back. The Padres are tied for second at .667 and 0.5 games back behind the division leading Diamondbacks (.714).
