A 6-month search the yielded the top prospects located in Denver and Colorado Springs and had widdled down to one contender for the past few weeks finally ended when Colorado officially hired Jeff Bzdelik yesterday. It's comforting to know that in a 6-month search, Mike Bohn, Colorado's athletic director really went out and scoured the country to find that rare gem.
It's also nice to see that we're willing to settle for someone who led his team to a NIT semi-final game at best. That's marginally better than Ricardo Patton: 4 NIT appearances and 2 NCAA births, but with no significant progress in any tournament. In fact, Colorado's highest achievement was in 1990, reaching the NIT semi-final game, before the Patton era.
But in the end, winning cures all problems. If Bzdelik can win, and turn Colorado into a respectable program once again, it won't matter how far Bohn searched. Lose, and the heat will likely cost Bohn and Bzdelik their jobs. With the low standard that Patton has turned in for his final season, having some marginal success with a flash in the pan success of a Big 12 Conference title will make Bzdelik a legend at Colorado.
