According to Google Trends, a web site that gives historical data about individual keywords, the city that has searched for the term 'college football' the most since 2004 is Birmingham, Alabama. Second on the list? Gainesville, Florida, home of the current national champions. As my colleague said with a smile though, searching for the term "college football" might mean the sport is very popular there, or it might just mean the citizens are too dumb to know what the sport is so they have to look it up on Google. While we know that's not the case with any of the cities on the list, it is an interesting side note that the misspellings "colege football" and "colledge football" were most common in Atlanta, Georgia. Anyhow, here are the top ten cities for the search "college football" according to Google Trends:
1. Birmingham, AL
2. Gainesville, FL
3. Lincoln, NE
4. Omaha, NE
5. Columbia, SC
6. Columbus, OH
7. Jackson, MS
8. Oklahoma City, OK
9. Memphis, TN
10. Austin, TX
For those that wonder why there are no heavily populated cities on the list, Google calculates the popularity by taking "the ratio of searches for the term coming from each city [and dividing] by total Google searches coming from the same city."
On a note unrelated to football, I was surprised to see searches for the word "porn" on a slight decline since 2005. Perhaps because too many people already know where to find it, so no point in searching? Google Trends did reveal that cities in the United Kingdom had the distinct pleasure of taking up all top five spaces for the popularity of that search term. Don't tell the Queen...
