The first week of College Football is nearly in the books (#19 FSU plays at Clemson tonight). This weekend had some very good games, including a no-name team beating the #5 team in the nation.
Top 25 Teams
Idaho 10
(1) USC 38
- USC out-passed, out-ran, and out-played the Idaho Vandals, as they were supposed to. Heisman hopeful, John David Booty, had a good game throwing for 206 yards for 3 TD's, and 1 INT, with a 66% completion percentage. The Trojans turned the ball over 3 times, but the SC defense stopped the Vandals on third-down 13 out of 17 times, and gave up just 253 total yards compared to the USC offenses 420.
(2) LSU 45
Miss. St. 0 (Thurs.)
- Mississippi State gained just 146 total yards, and QB MIchael Henig threw 6 INT's!!! No way can you win after you turn the ball over 7 times (1 fumble lost). The defense was deffinitely the difference in this 45-point deficit.LSU starting QB Matt Flynn went 12 for 19 for 128 yards, and 2 TD's.
W Michigan 24
(3) WV 62
- West Virginia scores their highest scoring game in six years. With two heisman hopefuls, Pat White and Steve Slaton, the Mountaineers can't help not to win. White threw for 192 yards and 2 TD's, and ran for 92 yards on just 9 attempts and 2 rushing TD's. RB Steve Slaton ran for 109 yards on 16 carries and 3 Rushing TD's, as well 2 Receptions for 61 yards and a TD. This offense could lead the Mountaineers all the way to a National Championship, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Heisman Trophy winner came from this offense.
Ark. St. 13
(4) Texas 21
- This game was alot closer than the other three top 25 games. Arkansas State outscored them in nearly every category except points. Arkansas State had more passing, rushing, and total yards, as well as FD's, time of possession, yards per rush, and yards per pass. The Longhorns had more turnovers, and both teams had ten penalties, but Texas had more penalty yards, yet, Texas happened to score more points. The reason for that may have been the Indians 3 for 12 third-down % as compared to the Longhorns 9 for 15, all I know, is that this game could have gone either way.
App St. 34
(5) Michigan 32
- This game was also close, yet Michigan wasn't as fortunate as Texas was. The difference was that Appalachian State blocked two FG's, and sealed the win. But in most categories the Wovlerines outscored the App. St. Mountaineers. The MIchigan Special Teams just couldn't block the defenders, I have a feeling that the coaches will have them working on special teams this week. This game has already been called one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.
W. Kentucky 3
(6) Florida 49
- This game didn't have the makings of a comeback, fortunately for the Gators. Tim Tebow had a spectacular day, going 13 for 17 for 3000 passing yards, and 3 TD's, which went for an average of 17.6 yards per pass attmept. The Gators offense outgained the West Kentucky Hilltoppers 510 total yards to 204 total yards.
Wash. St. 21
(7) Wisconsin 42
- Tyler Donavan, and P.J. Hill lead the Badgers to a 42-21 vicotory after Donavan threw for 284 yards and 3 TD's, and Hill ran for 84 yards and 2 TD's. Wisconsin gained 486 total yards and cruised to a 1-0 start.
N Texas 10
(8) Oklahoma 79
- This wasn't even close, North Texas had no chance after the half, Oklahoma scored 49 points in the first half, while N. Texas scored no points in the first half. The sooners gained a monstorous 668 total yards throughout the game.
E Carolina 7
(9) VT 17
- Virginia Tech won their first game, since the VT Massacre back in the late Spring/early Summer. VT lead 10-7 at the half, and pulled away with the victory after scoring on a 21-yd TD pass early in the fourth quarter. VT ran for just 33 rushing yards compared to ECU's 142, but still outgained the Pirates 278-261. The difference may have been the penalties, ECU was hit with 12 penalties for 69 yards compared to VT's 4 for 42 yards. VT had just a 1.1 yard-per carry average (33 yards on 31 carries). VT turned the ball over 3 times as well.
Murray St. 10
(10) Louisville 73 (Thurs.)
- Another week-one blowout took place in Louisville after Louisville outscored the Murray State Racers by a score of 49-10 at the half. Louisville gained 655 total yards, the success at gaining yards against the Murray State defense was what carried the Cardinals to a victory.
Youngstown St. 6
(11) Ohio St 38
- Ohio State is trying to get back into the top 10 after being number one all last year, and then getting blownout by the Gators in the National Championship. The Buckeyes are off to a good start (even though they were expected to easily blow this team out), the Youngstown State Penguins had just 85 rushing yards and 176 passing. While Ohio State had 147 and 270, for a total of 417 yards. OSU had just one TO, but the Penguins didn't turn te ball over at all.
(15) Tennessee 31
(12) California 45
- This was the game of the week, unfortunately for these two teams, they had to start off the season playing a top 25 team, while all of the others played a no-namer. But that also helps the winner's resume`, but now Tennessee will be bumped down a few spots in the top 25. Both team's QB's had great days, but the difference was Cal's RB Justin Forsett (26 ATT, 156 YDS, 1 TD).
