What did we learn from the first weekend of NCAA football games?
I spent the past three days parked in front of my TV watching football. Although it is too early to come to too many conclusions, we still learned a lot about certain players, teams, conferences, and the NCAA in general. Here are a few observations I made as I vegged out in front of the tube:
- A lot of college teams actually do play preseason games. Louisville vs. Murray State, Oklahoma vs. North Texas, and Ohio State vs. Youngstown State are just a few examples . Instead of preseason games, how about playing in actual competition to have a better shot at the BCS title?
- If you are going to play a “preseason game,” it better be against a team you can blow out. Michigan really blew it by losing to Appalachian State, but some other teams hurt their stock against “cupcakes” as well. Virginia Tech struggled against East Carolina and Texas barely beat Arkansas State. Playing the “easy” schedule does not always give you the best results.
- Tyrone Willingham is a great coach. Tyrone is starting his third season at Washington and trying to rebuild the program. He started out 2007 on the right foot, beating up on another “rebuilding” program in Syracuse. I know that Syracuse is nothing to write home about, but when a team travels 3500 miles and buries another BCS conference team, it is a great win.
- Notre Dame is in for a long season. You think they would like to have Tyrone Willingham back in South Bend?
- The Pac-10 is the second best conference in the country. The SEC is the clearly the best, but USC, Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington were all impressive in their debuts. I wonder if Les Miles would agree with that last statement.
We learned a lot this weekend, but we have a lot more to come. I look forward to seeing what the NCAA season has in store for us.
