College Football Playoffs: The Elite Eight

The College Football Elite Eight go head-to-head this weekend.
Oh wait, that’s not the case. Instead, we have some “must-see” bowl games this weekend.
• Utah vs. Navy – Earlier this year, Navy couldn’t get past the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 59-52 but were fortunate to play Notre Dame the next week to finish off the season with a four-game win streak.
• Memphis vs. Florida Atlantic – Can anyone name one player in this game?
• Southern Miss vs. Cincinnati – The PapaJohns.com Bowl. Yum, we love that garlic sauce.
• New Mexico vs. Nevada – Will the New Mexico Lobos be able to win in their own stadium in this nail biting Mountain West-WAC match-up?
• BYU vs. UCLA – Coach-less UCLA is kindly allowing every coaching vacancy to be filled before it makes a decision. There’s nothing like a rematch from earlier this season. We can’t wait to see the re-rematch next year as UCLA plays at BYU at the beginning of the football season.
• Boise State vs. East Carolina – The Broncos leave the “smurf turf” for a second consecutive bowl game season. They hope to triumph over the Pirates of East Carolina. The 7-5 Pirates recently lost to 3-9 Marshall. Count on the Broncos players to have sunburns as they prepare the Pirates in Honolulu.
Let’s look at the bowl games we should have seen this weekend. Visit this link to see the first round match-ups in our college football playoff.
• #1 Ohio State vs. #9 West Virginia – Last week, the Buckeyes slipped past a pesky BYU team and the Mountaineers took down Kansas in Lawrence. It was the Mountaineers last game together as Rich Rodriguez spent the rest of the week negotiating with Michigan. Rodriguez will sit in Ann Arbor watching his team play against his #1 public enemy for years to come.
• #2 LSU vs. #7 USC – Both teams didn’t look ahead as they took care of business against Clemson and Hawaii the week before. Is this a great game or what? The conference champions of the Pac-10 and SEC face off in the quarterfinals. This may be the game of the season.
• #3 Virginia Tech vs. Florida – Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow proved he deserved the award after the Gators took down Chase Daniels and the Missouri Tigers. The Hokies had little trouble with Illinois in Blacksburg. The tough Tech defense has a shot to stop Tebow and his explosiveness in order to advance to the semi-finals.
•#4 Oklahoma vs. #5 Georgia – Georgia beat Arizona State, while the Sooners barely stopped Matt Ryan and Boston College last week. The Sooners’ youth contend against the youth of the Bulldogs. Each team continues to get better as the season progresses. After this week, we might be convinced the winner will be the favorite to win the title.
This looks like a great weekend. Can anyone tell me why we can’t have these bowl games and the playoffs during the same weekend? The NBA thanks college football for not ruining their attendance and television ratings.
