Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA)
Who knows why they decided to change the name of the divisions, but Division I-A is now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision, while Division I-AA is now the Football Championship Subdivision. It'll take a bit for me to get used to that, so for now I'll stay with Division I and I-AA. Bear with me. Last year, 77 Division I-AA teams played I-A teams. The Division I-AA teams went 6-71, with North Dakota St. nearly pulling off the upset at Minnesota, clearly outplaying them throughout the game. The six games they won:
Cal Poly beat San Diego St. - 16-14
Montana St. beat Colorado - 19-10
New Hampshire beat beat Northwestern - 34-17
North Dakota St. beat Ball St. - 29-24
Portland St. beat New Mexico - 17-6
Richmond beat Duke - 13-0
This year, there are only 70 games between the two divisions. Here are some games to keep an eye on as potential upsets:
James Madison vs. North Carolina - September 1
Cal Poly vs. Idaho - September 8
Northern Arizona vs. Arizona - September 8
Southern Illinois vs. Northern Ilinois - September 8
New Hampshire vs. Marshall - September 15
North Dakota St. vs. Central Michigan - September 22
UC Davis vs. San Jose St. - September 29
North Dakota St. vs. Minnesota - October 20
Delaware vs. Navy - October 27
Although all of these games are some that you should keep your eye on, the one that I will be paying the most attention to (besides the NDSU games) is one occuring on Saturday. Two-time defending I-AA champion Appalachian St. travels to the "Big House" to take on powerhouse Michigan. It will be a good example of the athletic difference between a top-notch I-AA team and a top-notch I-A team.
Enjoy the games...
