Games to Watch:
- My pick in bold
- 9 Virginia Tech at #2 LSU
I like both defenses - a lot. The reason I am picking LSU is Matt Flynn, and they're at home. These two teams are similar, great defenses, okay offenses, good special teams. However, the difference is Matt Flynn knows how to manage the game. He understands that the most important thing for his team is for him to not make mistakes. He played ultra-conservative last week, and the defense dominated, intercepting six passes against Mississippi St. Sean Glennon, on the other hand, doesn't quite get it yet. Maybe he never will. He made some costly mistakes that could've been disasterous. This game might not be close.
- 19 TCU at #7 Texas
This is TCU's Super Bowl. It just so happens to be in the second week of the year. Texas didn't look good last week against Arkansas St., squeaking out a 21-13 victory. In fact, it could've been even more interesting than that. An onside kick at the end of the game recovered by Arkansas St. was wrongly penalized because of an "illegal formation." TCU absolutely dominated Texas's division member Baylor, 27-0, and that was without star DE Tommy Blake. He'll be ready, as well as the rest of the stingy defense. I can see Texas coming out and playing a lot better though. Texas in a close one.
Miami at #5 Oklahoma
Miami kicked off new coach Randy Shannon's career with a 31-3 victory over Marshall. That was impressive. Even more impressive though was Oklahoma demolishing North Texas 79-10. Ouch. RB DeMarco Murray and the running attack will be at full force for this one. Oklahoma wins.
#16 Nebraska at Wake Forest
Last year's ACC champs lost the opener to conference foe Boston College. To add insult to injury, QB Riley Skinner is out with a shoulder injury. Nebraska, led by Tom Osb- er, Bill Callahan, ran for 413 yards in the 52-10 victory over Nevada. This one will be close until halftime, but the Huskers will ultimately wear them down and win going away.
USF at #17 Auburn
USF is my pick to win the Big East this year. This is a statement game for them. They didn't look particularly good against Elon, winning 28-13, but neither did Auburn, who somehow managed to beat Kansas St. by 10 despite trailing pretty much the entire game and getting outplayed. It's tough to win at Auburn, so I'm going with the Tigers in a battle.
Oregon at Michigan
I know Appalachian St. beat Michigan last week. I don't know what happened there. Michigan was one of my favorites to win it all this year. I knew they had some work to do on defense, but I didn't know it was that bad. Michigan is a proud program though, and their fans and players will be geared up for this one against Oregon. They better be.
Mississippi St. at Tulane
Three of the last four in this series have been decided by a touchdown or less.
Nevada at Northwestern
Nevada got killed by a Big 12 powerhouse, Northwestern shutout FCS Northeastern. Who knows...
Indiana at Western Michigan
Indiana killed FCS Indiana St. last week. Western Michigan got killed against West Virginia. Who knows...
N.C. State at Boston College
Boston College played hard against conference foe Wake Forest, winning 38-28. N.C. State is coming off a disappointing loss to UCF. They also lost RB Toney Baker for the year and are switching quarterbacks. Former Nebraska QB Harrison Beck gets the nod. My 6-2 conference prediction for N.C. State isn't looking too good right now.
Colorado at Arizona St.
Colorado looked good at times and awful at times against Colorado St. They couldn't stop the pass which isn't good because a pass-happy PAC-10 team is next.
UPSET SPECIALS
- 10 Cal at Colorado St.
Overconfident? Maybe. Cal's speed could do Colorado St. in, but watch out for the passing attack of Colorado St. QB Caleb Hanie was 20-27 for 229 and 3 TDs. Maybe, just maybe, Cal won't escape thier first ever trip to Fort Collins.
- 22 Boise St. at Washington
Washington traveled across the U.S. and killed Syracuse. Boise St. stayed home and beat up on Weber St. Husky Stadium is going to be rockin'.
